The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a dedicated Legal Assistant II to participate in Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) Fellowship Cohort 24-2 with USAA. The HOH Fellowship Program builds an extraordinary experience for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses that increases competitiveness and improves opportunities to find meaningful employment by providing development, skills, and exposure to corporate working environment and private sector business operations.. HOH Fellowship Programs are best-in-class workforce development programs that are cohort based and twelve weeks in duration.

As a participant in the Military Fellowship Program, we understand that in most cases Fellows are ending their active service commitments and actively relocating. Therefore, while participating in the Fellowship program, Fellows are authorized to work remotely. If selected for full time employment, we offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in the following location: San Antonio, TX.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What You'll Do

 

  • Leads complex legal assignments with a high level of business impact and delivers appropriate solutions.
  • Applies intermediate knowledge to assist in providing support for the investigative process of a trial by gathering documents and information for legal assignments.
  • Collaborates with team to evaluate risk of alternatives and calculate costs of potential liability and assesses benefits/drawbacks.
  • May assist in preparing drafts of legal documents such as discovery responses, affidavits, motions, corporate minutes, contracts and other legal documents.
  • Applies intermediate knowledge to assist with proper filing of documents with regulatory authorities, courts, other tribunals, monitors status and distributes copies.
  • Assists team with preparing presentations and briefing material on topics relevant to USAA business.
  • Coordinates management and maintenance of attorneys' files per the attorney's specifications.
  • May assist with administrative tasks to include, but not limited to, calendar responsibilities to ensure all deadlines are met; check writing, check requesting, copying, and handling mail as vital to ensure continuous business operations.
  • May act as a liaison between attorney and outside counsel in the exchange of information.
  • Collaborates with team members to resolve issues and to identify appropriate issues for partner concern.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are optimally identified, measured, supervised, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What You Have

 

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required.
  • 1 year of experience in legal support or related experience to include multi-tasking in a fast paced and complex business environment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the function/field and proven application of knowledge, skills and abilities towards work products required.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively in person, by e-mail and telephone; efficiently manage instructions from a diverse group of clients, attorneys and staff; provide reports with professional courtesy and tact.
  • Strong ability to focus on details, demonstrate accuracy, and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.

What Sets You Apart

 

  • Proven experience assisting attorneys in handling discovery, conducting legal research, drafting motions, and performing trial preparation at a personal injury insurance defense law firm in the state of Texas.
  • Paralegal certification preferred
  • Notary Public preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Current participant in the Hiring Our Heroes Fellowship Cohort 24-2

What We Offer

Hiring Our Heroes Fellows are paid by the HOH program.

If selected for a full-time role, USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The hiring range for this position is: $48,890 -$87,600

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
