The Company

Outschool's mission is to inspire kids to love learning. We achieve this by linking learning to kids’ interests, connecting them with other classmates who share their passions, and giving them the autonomy to pick their own paths. Our small group classes meet over live video chat with teachers who celebrate their unique strengths and empower all learners to develop confidence and a strong sense of self.

We're also focused on removing barriers for historically underserved learners who face systemic challenges to their success. Outschool.org is a nonprofit that partners with homeschooling co-ops, community-based organizations, and schools across the U.S. to provide marginalized communities with access to virtual and hybrid learning experiences.

We believe that diversity drives learning. To meet our mission, we encourage, support, and celebrate different ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds. As a fully distributed (remote) team, we challenge one another to find the most effective way to empower learners, teachers, and parents. Your name, race, religion, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and age are not barriers; they are why we want to work with you. We invite talented and creative candidates who value the importance of nurturing a child's boundless curiosity to join us on this journey.

The pandemic has been challenging for families all over the globe. We acted quickly and worked together to provide quality resources to learners, parents, and teachers in the past year. As communities worldwide rethink their approach to education, Outschool will continue to innovate and provide kids with unique opportunities to explore their passions.

The Role

Outschool is looking for a strategic, impact-seeking senior Lead Counsel to join our legal team. We’re looking for a candidate who is business minded with a track record of providing practical, creative, and timely business advice, supporting all stages of product development and launches, and serving as a trusted legal advisor to product teams. This person is also a jack-of-all-trades and can take on other legal areas of the business as needed. Outschool has a unique titling philosophy and this role would be a Director level role at other companies.

As Lead Counsel, Product, you’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure Outschool’s product launches are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. You will work as an integral part of the Outschool legal team and work in partnership with other teams within the company to help Outschool achieve its mission.

You have the ability to seamlessly and effectively manage complex, multifaceted legal issues and projects simultaneously. You’re excited to be hands-on and embrace challenges to drive desired outcomes.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Spot and analyze issues related to consumer protection laws, employment laws, privacy laws and regulations, litigation, commercial and contractual issues, trust & safety, and other legal requirements.
  • Review global products, features, platforms and initiatives to provide practical legal risk mitigation strategies for products across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Support domestic and international growth initiatives and coordinate across teams to recognize and mitigate legal issues.
  • Ability to prioritize high volume workload, set goals, and meet deadlines in a fluctuating and sometimes ambiguous business environment
  • Understand and advance Outschool’s priorities by connecting issues across business leaders and subject matter experts to develop and drive comprehensive, long-term legal strategies that balance risk and business objectives
  • Lead company-wide strategic initiatives including advising senior management, and coordinating and driving cross-stakeholder alignment on complex projects.
  • Exercise impeccable judgment in escalating issues or engaging other stakeholders - such as proactively identifying issues that may be outside the scope of your subject-matter expertise, and working with other members of the Legal team or outside counsel
  • Knowledge and ability to assist with other legal projects on an as-needed basis

DESIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • 9+ years of combined experience working in a law firm and in-house legal department
  • Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (or eligibility to register as authorized in-house counsel).
  • You are a pragmatic and thoughtful advisor. You are confident distilling complex issues into key risks and providing succinct advice that is tangible and can be operationalized by business leaders.
  • You are highly analytical and energized by engaging with substantive legal topics.
  • You are adept at balancing legal risks and commercial interests, and comfortable navigating ambiguity.
  • You are self-directed and can move quickly, without sacrificing quality. You have demonstrated experience leading large, sensitive matters within defined timeframes.
  • You are comfortable simultaneously managing large workloads, competing client demands, and shifting priorities within a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
  • You have excellent communication, writing, and persuasion skills
