The Director of Employee Relations oversees our Employee Relations department to ensure SPS is following federal, state, and university related policies, laws, and regulations. This position interacts with all levels of our organization regarding employee relations, legal compliance, investigations, discipline, terminations, and negotiated separations. The Director of ER works with a great deal of independent discretion in decision making and execution of responsibilities including supervising employees. Overall, SPS is an organization that prioritizes a harmonious work-life equilibrium and promotes teamwork and creativity. This position offers the opportunity to broaden the scope of the role to encompass involvement in projects at both regional and global levels. It continuously offers the highest level of service to all client and SPS employees while maintaining a professional image of the company by providing prompt, courteous and efficient service. The successful candidate will have a background in:

  • Significant engagement in employment-related legal affairs, encompassing hands-on experience in corporate legal divisions or law practices.
  • The application of employment law in multiple states as it pertains to employee relations matters.
  • Experience in California and Canada employment practices a plus.
  • Legal and compliance matters dealing with, but not limited to Benefits, Compensation, Workers Compensation, Leave of Absences, OSHA, ADA, ACA and Environmental, Health & Safety Programs
  • Research, develop and implement policies.
  • Conduct internal investigations.
  • Expertise establishing and maintaining Employment Policies/Procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Liaison and counsel to the Executive Leadership Team on all legal matters pertaining to employment.
  • May direct, lead and/or provide guidance to various leadership in the full cycle process of adjudicating any and all employee relations matters.
  • Represents SPS in all labor matters/hearings/proceedings, audits, workplace issue/claims from EEO/EEOC (i.e. Harassment/Discrimination, Title VII etc.) to direct claims from employees.
  • May partner with Head of Legal/Compliance or Outside Counsel as needed.
  • Monitor employment law developments and best practices; Responsible for keeping all employment policies & procedures up to date and providing any training and counsel to the teams as needed.
  • Reviews employee communications for legal compliance.
  • Pre-Employment Background Checks: Will help establish a program that meets all state/federal guidelines; Decision maker for all background check issues as they arise.
  • Administers SPS’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program and is an active participant on the EHS committee.
  • Will lead the company’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives and ensure legal compliance in all employee programs.
  • Will serve as counsel and legal resource for Compensation, Benefits, Recruitment, Health/Safety, and other Human Resources programs.
  • Manages, supervises, and oversees subordinate human resources members.
  • Opportunity to participate in regional and global projects.
  • All other duties and/or responsibilities may be assigned by Management based on the business needs as we continue to grow.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school; A specialty in employment law is desired.
  • 5-7 years of Employee Relations and a legal background.
  • Legal background in inhouse counsel, multi-site operations or a retail environment.
  • Excellent people skills and enjoys working with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to adapt quickly.
  • Technical proficiency: Working experience using Microsoft Office tools (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook/Teams/SharePoint) & HRIS programs.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to deal with high stress situations as well as the ability to help diffuse escalated situations is highly desired.
  • Effective organization, planning, and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of general HR principles, current concepts, laws, practices Current EEO laws, Fair Pay to state specific laws of states like CA, NY, MN, WA, IL etc.) in multiple states
  • Willing and able to travel if needed.
