What’s the role?

The Senior Director of Enforcement Operations within our Trust & Safety Organization leads our content safety and legal enforcement operations, setting vision and strategy and overseeing teams responsible for enforcing Etsy’s seller policies, including acceptable use. These teams keep Etsy and our community safe by monitoring and detecting brand, legal and content risks through a combination of automated systems, machine learning, and human review.

We are seeking a senior organizational leader and a resilient self-starter who thrives in driving structure in ambiguous spaces, working in fast paced environments and using strong strategic and critical thinking skills to define solutions to new problem sets. The ideal candidate has a passion for developing others, spotting and developing talent, and bringing out the best in your teams. You are a doer and an influencer who will work directly with our cross-functional partners (Engineering, Product, Policy, Legal, etc.), as well as all of the teams within Trust & Safety, to scale global projects from inception to launch.

As the Senior Director of Trust & Safety Enforcement Operations you are critical to Etsy’s success. Your team’s work is woven through almost all of Etsy’s initiatives and central to Etsy’s trusted brand. Etsy’s growth requires leaders that possess the drive and tenacity to get things done and can adapt quickly to find creative solutions to sophisticated problems.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Head of Trust & Safety and the base salary range will be $205,000 - $267,000 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Depending on where you are located in the United States, your work mode will be Local Hybrid, Regional Hybrid or Remote. What does the day-to-day look like?

 

  • This role will focus on intermediary liability and notice-and-takedown matters, including intellectual property, counterfeits, trademarks, and prohibited content. You will tackle novel issues arising from content posted by sellers on Etsy and changes in international regulations.
  • Your organization includes two sub-teams: Marketplace Safety and Legal Response & Enforcement. Each of these teams enforces different aspects of our seller policies.
  • Set the vision and strategy for your team and oversee employee performance, implementing, managing and reporting through metrics, service level agreements and key performance indicators.
  • Help your partners across the company build successful products by highlighting marketplace risks and strategizing solutions.
  • Review, recommend, and assist in the implementation of new methods, processes and procedures to make daily operations more efficient and effective.
  • Develop ongoing strategies to quickly and efficiently identify and remove high risk and fraudulent sellers from the marketplace, minimizing negative impact to Etsy and our buyers.
  • Set the long-term strategy and guide managers and program managers to support your vision through daily, weekly, and monthly initiatives.
  • Build and cultivate an impactful internal team of 30+ people. You will also develop and oversee outsourced components of the work.
  • Partner with Engineering and Analytics teams to conceptualize and refine automated detective controls crafted to identify risks, based on seller behavioral shifts and patterns.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

 

  • Minimum of 10+ years of Trust & Safety or relevant experience.
  • A thoughtful, collaborative leader with strong executive-level communication skills and a highly developed ability to influence others.
  • A successful track record leading a large operational organization specializing in policy enforcement, legal support, customer support, and/or strategy.
  • The ability to partner seamlessly with product and engineering team members in furtherance of developing tech solutions to support risk detection and operational excellence.
  • Experience assessing legal risks, as well as practical, business, and reputational risks and can apply that assessment to a marketplace business model.
  • Executive presence and clearly articulate strategies, goals and outcomes at the C-Level.
  • Adaptable and resilient in nature and quickly pivot - and bring your team along for the ride - as the business landscape evolves.
  • Experience with legal matters involving offerings of counterfeit goods online and other intellectual property-related topics (trademark, copyright, etc.) a plus.
  • Experience with intermediary liability issues and laws (E-Commerce Directive, DMCA, etc.) a plus.
  • Experience with obligations of online intermediaries in the United States and elsewhere, including notice-and-takedown requirements a plus.
