Job Summary and Qualifications
Works both independently and under direction of Senior Counsel in the Legal Department to support all phases of the arbitration and/or litigation of managed care disputes. This paralegal position will have responsibility for a wide variety of managed care litigation tasks, including: handling service of process; assisting with legal-hold notices; preparing and filing documents required to initiate arbitration and/or litigation; creating and maintaining litigation/arbitration files; handling and reviewing medical records; and conducting legal and internet research. In addition, this paralegal position will work directly with external counsel, vendors and medical and other experts, as well as with internal company departments on all aspects of fact and expert discovery, including the collection and production of electronic data. This paralegal position will also work with Legal Department staff members on the analysis and reporting of managed care litigation matters.
90% - Litigation and arbitration management and support; and
10% - General administration and reporting tasks.
Qualifications: Successful candidate will have strong analytical, problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills; substantial knowledge of litigation processes and procedures; and ability to work with computerized data bases and research tools. Familiarity with or ability to learn Outlook, Word, Excel, Sharepoint, and PowerPoint required. Familiarity with legal hold software, electronic case management tools, and e-discovery software preferred. Prior experience with medical records and healthcare a plus.
Education/Experience: College graduate. ABA Paralegal Certification or comparable qualification. Five to seven years litigation paralegal experience. Participation in continuing education to maintain and enhance skills is expected and supported by the company.
Other Information: The Litigation Section of the HCA Legal Department consists of ten full-time litigation attorneys, four of whom are dedicated exclusively to managed care litigation. Those four attorneys currently are supported by one litigation paralegal, one analyst and eight contract attorneys. Litigation paralegals are assigned to support specific attorneys within the Litigation Section. Although travel is very limited, the candidate needs to be able and willing to travel occasionally and to work evenings or weekends occasionally. Must have the physical capacities associated with office work, including minor lifting and carrying, sitting at a computer, talking on the phone, and ability to move between floors and buildings on the corporate campus.
