Corporate Counsel in the SCI operations legal group wear two hats. Primarily, operations lawyers advise location- and market-level management for the approximately 2,000 funeral homes and cemeteries owned and operated by SCI and its affiliate entities across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Subject matter areas run the entire gamut, e.g.: customer complaints, employee disputes, real estate, small-scale construction, and assisting business owners in reaching their goals and serving customers in new and creative ways while minimizing risk. The second hat is that of counsel to Service Corporation International’s corporate functions; counsel are assigned to provide legal support to various business units within SCI, e.g. treasury, tax, supply chain, etc. Candidates who enjoy collaborating with others and learning new skills will thrive in this role.
The characteristics and traits which will make for a successful Corporate Counsel are common between both functions: a drive to help others, sound judgment, unassailable ethics, and – most importantly – the interpersonal skills necessary to develop personal relationships with business owners.
