About The Role

Roku, Inc. is seeking a Senior Counsel, Business and Legal Affairs (Employment and Labor Counsel) to join its legal team. You will work closely with Roku’s Legal and cross-functional teams advising on employment, labor and benefits matters. The successful candidate must have a strong working knowledge of employment and labor laws and hands-on experience translating legal requirements into actionable advice for the People and other teams. The role requires an entrepreneurial mindset that enables you to work independently.

The position will be located in Austin, TX.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide advice and counsel to the people team on a broad range of employment issues including hiring; performance management; discipline and separations; reorganizations; wage and hour compliance; pay equity, contingent worker/contractor issues; reasonable accommodations; leaves of absence; privacy; benefits; workplace investigations; and other employment-related matters
  • Provide advice and counsel on global labor and employment framework and practices
  • Review and provide guidance on the development of global People policies and procedures
  • Monitor employment-related legal developments and engage proactively to drive compliance and implement risk-mitigating strategies
  • Draft and negotiate employment offers and agreements, separation and settlement agreements and other employment-related agreements
  • Advise on complex/sensitive employment matters and help resolve matters through pre-dispute resolution and/or positioning Roku for potential employment litigation
  • Manage employment-related claims and litigation, including managing outside counsel and responding to administrative charges, complaints, attorney’s letters, settlement demands and claims globally. Negotiate appropriate resolutions to claims and other pending matters
  • Assist with preparing, reviewing and implementing training programs
  • Draft and analyze contracts in support of the work of the people, workforce compliance and other teams
  • Assist with other projects as needed

We’re excited if you have

  • 5+ years of experience handling employment and labor issues in a demanding and innovative business and legal environment
  • Expertise in employment counseling with a strong understanding of Texas and/or California and federal employment and labor laws
  • In-house experience strongly preferred
  • Admission to the Texas, New York or California Bar preferred
  • Experience advising on employment and labor issues unique to the technology and/or entertainment/content production industries preferred
  • Knowledge of international employment and labor laws a plus
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, utilizing effective organizational skills to prioritize and manage deadlines for multiple simultaneous projects for multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-department and cross-functional role
  • Willingness to actively suggest process improvements while completing assignments
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, attention to detail and good judgment
