Director, Product Counsel – Denver, CO

Western Union is seeking a high caliber, experienced and energetic attorney, with experience in financial services regulation and technology to join our Product Legal team. This attorney will work closely and partner with leaders in the product organization and provide legal guidance as the product team develops, implements, and updates Western Union’s product offerings.

Role Responsibilities

 

  • Provide world-class legal oversight and direction for Western Union business units and shared services to deliver the Company’s strategic priorities.
  • Leadership role providing strategic legal and regulatory support for global initiatives and products.
  • Work cross-functionally to coordinate legal advice and drive optimal outcomes for the business.
  • Review, draft and negotiate agreements with strategic partners in coordination with business leaders and other internal stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to business partners within the Company and coordinate with outside counsel.
  • Research, analyze and monitor new and existing laws.
  • Stay current and advise the business and senior legal leadership on changes to the regulatory and competitive environments.
  • Review and advise on new and existing product requirements.
  • Drive end to end customer value and display a customer-first orientation.
  • May require management responsibilities for one or more legal professionals.

Role Requirements

 

  • 6-8 or more years of experience practicing either in-house or at a reputable law firm, with at least 3 years of those years focused on payments law, FinTech, or the digital assets and blockchain space.
  • Experience negotiating complex commercial deals in the technology or financial services space and/or working with strategic partners to launch new product experiences.
  • Ability to provide timely, concise, and business-focused legal advice on payments law, including federal and state consumer financial laws and regulations like Regulation E; data privacy laws; consumer protection laws; and new rules, enforcement actions and other guidance coming out of agencies such as the CFPB and the FTC
  • Ability to provide legal and regulatory guidance on the design and modification of products, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies, review product user experiences to ensure legal compliance and proper disclosures and help document guidance for consumption by members of both the legal and product teams.
  • Familiarity with launching e-money, wallets, ecosystems, digital assets, blockchain mobile and alternative payments, emerging payments technology and the payments industry
  • Experience identifying and counseling on risks arising from new products and features and developing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity.
  • Ability and drive to take ownership of projects and tasks which, in many cases, will be matters of first impression.
  • Comfortable with gray areas and interpreting and applying the law in unsettled contexts.

Salary

The expected pay range for this position is $155,000 - $200,000 USD per year, total on target compensation includes a base salary plus long-term and short-term incentives that align with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary based on candidates’ qualifications, skills, and competencies
