This is a full-time position reposting to the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

  • Etsy’s global Legal team works with every Etsy business unit, across our subsidiaries and offices worldwide, to provide timely and business-savvy legal advice. We help teams that design products, we draft contracts and policies, we advise engineers and leadership, advocate externally, and handle disputes to protect Etsy and our users. We support Etsy’s growth by delivering legal and business know-how with a great work ethic.
  • The Product & Marketing Legal team is a high-functioning legal team, tackling uncharted problems, and partnering with product and marketing teams to launch novel products.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Lead and manage Etsy’s Product & Marketing Legal team, including its House of Brands.
  • Support global product and marketing teams as they design and advertise groundbreaking products and features; balancing commercial, marketing, regulatory compliance, and privacy risk.
  • Advise business teams and collaborate with Legal team colleagues on evolving regulation; providing risk assessments, supporting change management, balancing resourcing and compliance considerations and identifying trends related to legal matters affecting sustainable business operations.
  • Work with internal partners across the business, colleagues within legal, and outside counsel, through clear communication and effective project management.
  • We are a global business. This role requires an attorney with experience identifying, understanding, and managing global product and marketing legal risk, and managing remote teams.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) that is admitted to a state bar (preferably NY or CA) and qualified to practice law in-house in New York.
  • 12+ years proven experience working in a mix of law firm and in-house (preferably tech) work.
  • Seasoned, supportive people manager who excels in leading and mentoring high-functioning teams.
  • Strong strategic thinking and business acumen, with the ability to balance legal considerations with business objectives.
  • Deep experience with product development issues, including web and mobile app development, privacy (US and international regs), intermediary liability, antitrust, Ad technologies, cookies and trackers, accessibility and more.
  • Keeps abreast of and advises on global regulatory trends and developments in relevant areas (e.g. privacy, AI, ESG, content regulation, marketing).
  • Experienced at advising internal clients and business partners on marketing and media-related matters, including advertising campaigns, social media reviews, and consumer and business insights; as well as evaluating risks and opportunities related to a company’s media assets and priorities, including marketing campaigns, influencers, content production, technology partnerships, merchandising vetting, and content distribution.
  • Passionate about clearly articulating risk and strategies to mitigate risk to clients and executives.
  • Effective communicator both verbally and in writing. You can speak to technical specialists or business leaders.
  • Ability to work in a high-velocity environment, meet tight deadlines, and act decisively.
  • Outstanding organizational and prioritization skills, attention to detail, and work ethic.

In Addition

  • Excellent business, negotiation and presentation skills. While we expect you to be able to read a spreadsheet and build a deck –– you can also analyze and communicate the information into a simple, effective message to others.
  • Great teammate. Your instinct when new work comes in is to volunteer to help, you are excited by new projects, aren't afraid to ask or answer a question, and you step up when a colleague needs a second set of hands.
  • You love what you do and could work in many places, but you want to work at Etsy because you recognize that having the chance to contribute impactful work and grow a company with an outstanding mission is a rare opportunity.
