Job Summary

We are looking for an inquisitive, self-starter with great interpersonal skills to join our legal team. This position will provide legal advice/consultation to the organization regarding contract negotiations, commercial law, litigation and other legal matters as well as partner with legal team and cross functional teams on special projects. The position will also represent the organization before customers, suppliers, third parties and government agencies. We need counsel who is interested in learning about our business, is committed to providing common sense, practical legal advice by identifying legal solutions and recommending a course of action. The position is in Phoenix, Arizona and we offer a hybrid remote work schedule.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel to organization on day-to-day legal matters within designated subject matter area/business unit; may advise senior management on complex legal matters.
  • Work with other legal team members and business team members in support of broader initiatives.
  • Ensures the organization remains compliant with all local, state, federal, and industry regulations/guidelines.
  • Recommend the most appropriate course of action, taking into consideration the interests of all relevant parties.
  • Keep abreast of legal developments within designated subject matter area/business unit and assist in the design and implementation of appropriate processes and policies to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrate a logical approach to addressing issues.
  • Apply cost-benefit and risk analysis, offer alternatives to challenges and propose solutions to problems.
  • Effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, to address the relevant legal and business issues, while being concise and easy to understand for non-lawyers.
  • Identify areas of legal risk and make recommendations and suggestions for improvement.
  • Lead or support strategic projects and negotiate complex issues to achieve business objectives.
  • Supervise outside counsel’s activities and budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Level Specifications

  • Coordinates with business or technical support teams comprised of individual contributors. Sets priorities for the team to ensure task completion. May coordinate work activities with other legal team members.
  • Assignments are largely established in accordance with schedules and deliverables. Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and business plans.
  • Collaborates daily with peers within similar functions primarily for the purpose of exchanging information.
  • Decisions have a direct impact on team operations. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve results may cause delays in schedules and require the allocation of additional time, people and/or financial resources.

Work Experience

  • Typically 5+ years with a bachelor's or equivalent

Education And Certification(s)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and job skills can be obtained.

Distinguishing Characteristics

  • Advanced university degree in law (e.g., J.D. or LL.M. in US, LL.D, LL.B or LL.M outside US) from accredited school required.
  • Must possess active license to practice law in assigned location or otherwise qualify to lawfully serve as in-house counsel in location where based.
  • Depending upon jurisdiction, may require fluency in one or more languages in addition to English.
  • Experience in a large law firm setting or having prior in-house experience.
  • Experience in commercial law, government contracting preferred.
