About The Position

This Civil Deputy County Attorney works within the Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, in the Appeals, Elections, Public Records and Tax Group. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to practice appellate law, including counseling clients, preparing briefs, and presenting oral arguments in State and Federal Courts. The attorney will also assist with advising County clients regarding election law, conducting trials and hearings, and preparing election appeals. The attorney will also have the opportunity to counsel clients regarding data privacy and public records, as well as to advise elected officials regarding tax law, including litigating tax cases.

In this role, you will practice client counseling, negotiate settlements, litigate, and try cases in court, and write motions and appeals. You will provide essential advice to County clients, including elected officials and County leaders. You will work collaboratively with other attorneys, legal assistants, and professional staff. You will have the opportunity to be mentored by experienced attorneys and to grow as an attorney, all while handling essential matters for the citizens of Maricopa County.

While previous experience in one or more of this Group’s practice areas is preferred, it is not required. Our attorneys will train the successful applicant. What is required is a willingness to learn, a commitment and ability to provide excellent service to clients, and a desire to practice meaningful types of law in a collegial, team-oriented environment.

About The Office

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a full-service law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the County government, its various elected officials and agencies, as well as the dedicated employees of Maricopa County. We handle matters such as tax appeals by County taxpayers, environmental enforcement cases, public records requests, and we defend legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against the County. Our division has four practice groups: Appeals, Elections, Public Records and Tax; Government Advice and Elected Officials; Human Resources and Behavioral Health; and Litigation.

We Require

 

  • Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school

Other Requirements

 

  • Valid Arizona driver's license upon hire
  • Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application
  • Recent writing sample

Job Contributions

 

  • Perform complex legal work and analysis as it pertains to litigation issues involving the client
  • Conduct research and analyze legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools
  • Handle a broad spectrum of civil claims as assigned by the Practice Group Leader, including advising government agencies
  • Assist the Civil Division with appeals work, including writing and editing appellate court briefs, defending clients at oral argument when scheduled, and helping other attorneys in the office by preparing appeals and arguments
  • Draft various documents, including reports and updates, motions, memorandums, and various other court documents as necessary, in the areas of elections, tax, public records, and other County litigation
  • Attend court to present and defend the client at status conferences, oral arguments on motions, in evidentiary hearings, and other hearings as set by the court
  • Provide risk analyses and status reports to the Practice Group Lead and, where appropriate, to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and clients on all cases and matters assigned
  • Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona

  • May require long periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing and moving about while performing duties
  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, using personal or county-owned vehicles
  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds
  • Teleworking is available after a probationary period at the discretion of management and the needs of the office
