Grammarly is excited to offer a remote-first hybrid working model _. Team members work primarily remotely in the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, or Poland. Certain roles have specific location requirements to facilitate collaboration at a particular Grammarly hub.

_ All roles have an in-person component: Conditions permitting, teams meet 2–4 weeks every quarter at one of Grammarly’s hubs in San Francisco, Kyiv, New York, Vancouver, and Berlin, or in a workspace in Kraków. _This flexible approach gives team members the best of both worlds: plenty of focus time along with in-person collaboration that fosters trust and unlocks creativity.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we are seeking a Product and Privacy Counsel to become a vital part of our Legal team, collaborating on exciting privacy and product projects. This role involves tackling novel privacy and product legal issues and contributing to building a world-class legal team. The person in this role will be a trusted advisor to our Engineering, Design, and Product teams, providing strategic and tactical advice regarding product and privacy laws. Additionally, they will engage in cutting-edge AI issues and initiatives related to user growth, monetization, privacy compliance, and international expansion. At the core of this position is a remarkable opportunity to make a significant impact by ensuring Grammarly maintains the trust of millions of daily users.

This role will work cross-functionally with our Engineering, Product, Marketing, Compliance, Trust, and Communications teams.

Your impact

As a Product and Privacy Counsel, you will take on critical product and privacy counseling projects with accuracy and ownership at the intersection of law, business, and technology. As a member of the Grammarly Legal team, you will also help develop the team’s culture through exemplary care for others and a solid commitment to finding creative solutions to complex questions. This role reports to the Head of Product, Privacy, and Policy.

In This Role, You Will

 

  • Identify and address novel product, regulatory, privacy, AI, and other legal risks and mitigations creatively and build processes for launching innovative products at scale.
  • Counsel members of our Product, Engineering, Design, Security, Marketing, and Trust teams on end-to-end product, privacy, and policy matters, serving as a resident expert on global privacy, data, product design, and information security.
  • Embed yourself within dedicated product teams, serving as a subject matter expert on legal questions related to the product, working cross-functionally with partner teams to draft terms, advise on mitigations, and strategize on customer communications.
  • Advise members of our Product organization on high-priority matters to guide organizational planning, including interpreting nascent AI laws, state privacy regulations, and accessibility requirements.
  • Collaborate with our Privacy Engineering and Security teams as a critical advisor, tracking high-impact laws, guiding our teams on critical questions, and creating scalable legal processes and playbooks for the internal team.
  • Co-lead our IP portfolio strategy, working with a world-class cross-functional team to build, protect, and manage Grammarly’s patents and trade secrets and establish and manage Grammarly’s patent program.
  • Advise the IT and Security teams on legal requirements related to security incidents.
  • Collaborate with our Engineering team to build and maintain open-source software policies, programs, and reviews.
  • Develop training for the teams you advise and provide periodic updates to the leadership team about legal developments and their implications for Grammarly’s product offerings.
  • Collaborate with the team on licensing, due diligence, and other product-related matters.

We’re Looking For Someone Who

  • Has the ability to manage multiple projects, stakeholders, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Is comfortable working with cross-functional teams and advising senior leaders on risk mitigation to ensure we take the optimal path.
  • Communicates clearly and empathetically both face-to-face and in writing.
  • Has 5+ years of experience in a demanding and time-sensitive legal role that involved advising high-growth companies on privacy and product issues. In-house and experience counseling on both B2C and B2B issues is a plus.
  • Holds a JD (required) and has been admitted to the bar, with a license to practice law in at least one US state.

Our US and Canada locations are categorized into compensation zones based on each geographic region’s cost of labor index. Base pay may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The expected salary ranges for this position are outlined below by compensation zone and may be modified in the future.

United States

Zone 1: $225,000 — $309,000/year (USD)

Zone 2: $203,000 — $278,000/year (USD)
