Purpose:

To provide effective legal counsel to assist in meeting the legal needs of a large, diverse health care financing and delivery system.

Responsibilities:

  • Subject to the responsibility, authority and oversight of the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, independently provide legal counsel and legal services as identified below to UPMC's corporate departments and to those UPMC hospitals, divisions and business units. Provide input into and oversight over budget submissions and tracking, particularly those budget matters relating to litigation. Carry out department level communication and satisfy system reporting requirements on behalf of the department.
  • Provide oversight of department processes and procedures, including as to retention and oversight of outside counsel serving UPMC. Coordinate legal resources within the department and with other UPMC in-house attorneys.
  • Provide high-level, proficient legal counsel to members of UPMC's senior leadership. Direct and manage significant system-wide legal functions, including litigation, data governance and data security.
  • Lead legal teams representing UPMC business units in complex and significant legal proceedings before arbitrators, administrative agencies, magistrates, state and federal courts and/or in regulatory and legal investigative proceedings. Independently exercise oversight of outside counsel in significant and complex litigation.
  • Exercising supervision, oversight and guidance of, and provide learning opportunities for, less senior UPMC attorneys. Apply general legal knowledge in procedures and proceedings in federal court, in state court, and before administrative agencies in a wide range of substantive legal areas, including health care, insurance, employment, contracts, antitrust and intellectual property.
  • Address and resolve legal issues as they arise on a daily basis. Apply legal knowledge, analysis and judgment to identify avenues of alternative dispute resolution.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of a corporate-wide programs relating to: (1) legal issues implicated by technology, data governance and artificial intelligence; and (2) preservation and discovery of electronically-stored information.
  • Coordinate communications with insurers on matters involving litigation or potential litigation.
  • Report regularly to senior management on the status of all significant litigation. Review and recommend changes to corporate policy to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • J.D. Degree required.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience as a practicing attorney, including significant experience and expertise with litigation in both state and federal courts, particularly in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  • Must demonstrate strong legal analytical skills, communication skills, solid legal writing skills, and problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to independently handle unique, sensitive and complex legal matters, without supervision and oversight.
  • Must demonstrate ability to manage and lead teams of outside counsel in pursuit of positive outcomes for UPMC.
  • Attainment of highly developed and highly specialized legal knowledge experience and skills.
