The Optum Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs (LCRA) department is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join its legal team to provide legal guidance and contracting support to Optum Frontier Therapies and to other Optum pharmacies as assigned.

The candidate will become part of an innovative and experienced team of attorneys and legal professionals that operates in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment. The candidate must be able to prioritize multiple competing priorities, communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and customers, and have a desire to develop a deep knowledge of the business and operations of Optum Frontier Therapies and the other Optum pharmacies. Contract drafting experience and experience advising clients on health care regulatory matters (state and federal anti-kickback statutes and other fraud and abuse authorities) is necessary. Experience providing legal and regulatory support to specialty pharmacies is also strongly preferred.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the supervising Associate General Counsel and other members of the LCRA legal team to provide legal and regulatory support to business leaders of Optum Frontier Therapies and other Optum-owned pharmacies
  • Review, revise, and negotiate complex agreements with pharmaceutical manufacturers, payors, PBMs, network partners, vendors, customers, and other strategic partners
  • Counsel the business on compliance with state and federal fraud and abuse laws
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including privacy, finance, accounting, and compliance to advance business objectives and mitigate legal and regulatory risk
  • Communicate risks and explain contract language and terminology (e.g., limits of liability, indemnifications, audits, etc.) appropriately for a given audience
  • Manage multiple priorities (e.g., assigned contracts, projects, tasks)
  • Operate proficiently within a paperless contracting process/environment

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree and a bar admission in at least one (1) state
  • 5+ years of legal experience, with specific, documented experience in contract drafting and negotiation
  • Experience working on commercial agreements in the health care industry
  • Experience advising business partners on health care laws and regulations, including the Federal Anti-kickback Statute/Stark and the False Claims Act
  • Demonstrated solid transactional negotiation and drafting skills
  • Demonstrated solid business acumen
  • Demonstrated solid customer service and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts, with demonstrated ability to lead and contribute to team effort

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
