The Northwestern Mutual Law Department is seeking a dedicated and experienced paralegal who is interested in joining a diverse, challenging, and fast-paced practice advising the Company on immigration, employee sponsorship and human resource and employee benefit issues.  The position will provide day-to-day support for the company’s sponsorship program, and under the supervision of Department attorneys, provide legal advice to the human resources and talent acquisition teams.

 

What's The Role:

This paralegal will be a member of the Law Department’s Corporate Team, which is responsible for providing legal support and advice in the areas of taxation, human resources, employee benefits, and general corporate matters. This paralegal will report to the Vice President – Corporate Counsel in the Law Department.  Specifically, this paralegal will:

  •  Evaluate immigration cases as requested by various business units, consider and partner with stakeholders to develop immigration strategies for internal clients.  Work with outside counsel to provide information and documentation needed to prepare petitions and applications, including non-immigrant work visas (such as H-1B, TN, E-3), permanent residence applications (PERM, I-140), and adjustment of status applications (I-485).
  •  Review immigration forms, petitions, support letters, and other legal documents. Ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable immigration laws, regulations, and USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) guidelines.
  •  Manage immigration cases working with human resources personnel and outside counsel, establishing timelines and monitoring deadlines, coordinating postings and tracking necessary information.  Maintain accurate records on immigration cases.
  •  Stay informed about changes in immigration regulations and update internal stakeholders accordingly.  Assist in ensuring compliance with immigration laws and regulations, including PERM labor certification requirements, prevailing wage determinations, and i9 employment verification processes.
  •  Serve as a resource, answering questions, addressing concerns, providing updates on case statuses and responding to inquiries from employees on non-immigrant, dependent, and student visas, and managers regarding immigration matters.  Develop educational materials and communicate the legal requirements associated with sponsorship of employees to human resources and talent acquisition staff and other stakeholders.
  •  Identify opportunities for process improvements and assist in developing and implementing best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of immigration processes within the organization.
  •  Perform other duties related to human resource and employee benefit legal matters from time to time.
  •  In addition to base salary discussed below, Northwestern Mutual offers a competitive total rewards package including eligibility for a bonus under the Company’s annual incentive compensation plan.

 

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  •  Candidates must have at least three years of legal experience gained at a law firm, in-house and/or through a government position advising on immigration and employee sponsorship matters.
  •  The ideal candidate will have significant familiarity with federal immigration law and processes as it pertains to corporate sponsorship programs.  A paralegal certification is preferred.
  •  Candidates must have the ability to work with independently, with a moderate level of guidance and direction, and take ownership of immigration processes.

  •  This role requires a detail-oriented individual with excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  •  Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise good judgment.
  •  High level of proficiency in written and oral communications, including the ability to effectively explain the requirements and processes associated with employee sponsorship.
  •  Demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple moderately complex assignments.
  •  Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with and counsel clients throughout the enterprise, as well as attorneys and other professionals in the Law Department.
  •  The scope of this role may change over time to respond to business needs.  The successful candidate will be flexible and adaptable in terms of general abilities and aspirations.
  •  Bachelor's Degree preferred.

 

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$59,150.00

 

Pay Range - End:

$109,850.00

 

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
