Overview

The Associate Corporate Counsel is responsible for supporting Claims, Underwriting, and other disciplines within the Company.  The Associate Corporate Counsel will be available to assist with litigation strategy and legal analysis in all lines of insurance including General Liability, Construction Defect, Auto, UM/UIM, Professional Liability, Directors and Officers, First Party Property, Cyber, and Workers’ Compensation.    

 

The Associate Corporate Counsel must have experience in handling, evaluating, litigating, and resolving claims in state and federal court.  The Associate Corporate Counsel will be available to support and assist Claims, including adjusters, supervisors and managers concerning litigation and resolution strategy in numerous jurisdictions.

 

The Associate Corporate Counsel will maintain a solid understanding of AmTrust’s mission, vision, and values along with upholding the standards of the AmTrust organization and the AmTrust Litigation Department.

Responsibilities

  • The Associate Corporate Counsel will be available to assist with legal issues presented by the Claims Department, Underwriting, and other disciplines within the Company.

 

  • The Associate Corporate Counsel will provide broad litigation support to the Claims Department:
    • Provide guidance on additional investigation required to formulate a comprehensive plan of action.
    • Communicate with adjusters and Claims management providing litigation evaluation, assistance, and trial strategy.
    • Assist with claim resolution strategy while navigating exposure and costs.
    • Identify and assist with problematic jurisdictions, issues related to coverage, and research on specific legal issues.
    • Provide trial venue and jury verdict research to assist with matter evaluation and decision making.

 

  • The Associate Corporate Counsel will track and monitor matters with trial dates.
    • Review the underlying facts, liability assessment, injuries, and damages.
    • Monitor trial matters to ensure compliance with litigation guidelines.
    • Provide advice and recommendations and assist with pre-trial strategy including weighing the exposure versus the likely spend. 
    • Review and monitor defense counsel’s daily trial reports assisting as the trial progresses.
    • Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of trial counsel.

 

  • The Associate Corporate Counsel will be available to assist Underwriting, the Regulatory team, and other departments with the analysis of legal Issues, new statutes, multi-jurisdictional caselaw, and provide metrics and litigation data.

Qualifications

  • JD from accredited law school
  • 5+ years insurance industry experience handling claims, litigation management, and coverage experience under various insurance products.
  • Focus on litigation management is preferred.
  • Ability to issue spot, identify legal issues, and develop handling and resolution strategy.
  • Effective communication skills, ability to obtain information that is analyzed and delivered to others in an effective manner in both written and oral form.
  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations to larger groups.
  • Awareness and understanding of general insurance coverage and litigation issues in multi-jurisdictional venues.

Preferred: 

  • Certifications and/or professional designations preferred (examples, AIC, CPCU, ARM, etc.).
