Job Description

Required Education:

  • A baccalaureate degree, preferably in Pre-Law or Labor Relations, English, or Business, from an accredited college

Required Qualifications/Skills/Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years in relevant full-time paralegal experience
  • Strong proficiency in writing
  • Strong analytical skills

  • Experience in Labor Law
  • Experience in legal research
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 2013 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Preside over discipline and/or expedited grievance hearings

Paralegal Assistants to assist in the negotiated contractual grievance process. Under direction and with some latitude of independent action and judgement, conducts and presides over employee discipline and/or expedited grievance hearings at various Transit locations, including bus depots and remote locations. Gathers facts and issues decisions to form the basis of Transit’s position at arbitration proceedings and/or settle cases in accordance with CBA and/or established Transit norms. Conducts research to assist in the preparation of arbitration proceedings. Assists with scheduling grievance cases. May present expedited arbitration cases before an impartial arbitrator.

Job Duties

  • Preside over discipline and/or expedited grievance hearings at various New York City Transit work locations and write decisions
  • Assist in performing grievance-related investigations related to the grievance process
  • Assist attorneys in case preparation, including obtaining necessary documentation for case presentation, witness outreach and interviews, and preparing memoranda about the case
  • Update case status and files
  • May present cases before an expedited arbitrator
  • Hearings and writing decisions
  • Research and investigation
  • Organize documents to maintain version control
  • Produce Status/Progress Reports
  • Presiding over hearings between
  • Management and Union over employee discipline and/or other contractual benefits
  • Traveling to the five boroughs of New York City to conduct hearings/investigations
