Job Summary:

Assists attorneys in performing legal tasks in research, document production and overall legal support to the attorneys’ practice.

Responsibilities:
 

  • Index, organize and analyze legal and other documents. 

  • Provide assistance to attorney in finalizing releases, working with client contact to run Medicare to determine Medicare status of claimants.

  • Under the supervision of an attorney, prepare initial draft of pleadings, discovery responses, and other filings.

  • Draft and update Excel spreadsheet charts that monitor the progress of all litigation and settlements

  • Review releases executed by claimants to determine if all of the settling claimants and their counsel properly executed the release as well as all necessary ancillary documentation

  • Issue subpoenas and perform basic background checks.

  • Coordinate and participate in document production.

  • Manage client repository of cases in storage internally and also outside repositories

  • Work with accounting department regarding settlement funds received from client; prepare documents for transfer of funds to plaintiffs’ counsel; confer with plaintiff counsel to confirm banking information; draft and update settlement disbursement accounting  

  • Summarize medical records

  • Provide weekly updates of active cases to attorney  

  • Maintain and distribute case-at-a-glance spreadsheet for all pending litigation to attorneys working on files

  • Maintain calendar of deadlines, etc.

  • Revise Adams and Reese database case organizations per attorney requests

  • Review Federal and State Court dockets for filings concerning client

  • Summarize testimonies and documents using Harvey, the firm AI assistant

  • Review documents for discovery purposes

  • Manage index and documents in storage at Alliance repository

  • Load all documents and emails into IManage and maintain folders and subfolders in each case

  • Maintain spreadsheet of when settlements are funded and email to client of funding date for Medicare purposes

  • Draft and update Excel spreadsheet charts that monitor the progress of all litigation and settlements

  • Research internal Adams and Reese databases of the client regarding all litigations, some dating to 25 years ago

  • Research the litigation history of claimants; access JDG database for information on claimants and AR database

  • Access NORM AR database for documents pre-IManage

  • Acess JeffNet and CDC websites and docket sheet for pleadings filed in dockets; monitor case filings

 

  • Communicate with clients, court personnel, experts, attorneys and others by telephone, in person and in writing, obtaining and giving information as directed.

 

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
 

  • High School graduate.

 

  • 3 years of experience as a paralegal or legal secretary in a position involving significant decision making responsible.

 

  • Ability to type 65 wpm.

 

  • Competent in the use of computers and Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point and Microsoft Outlook.

 

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

 

  • Good organizational skills.

 

  • Excellent people skills.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

  • College degree
  • Paralegal certificate

Working Conditions:  
 
This position requires sitting for long periods of time while operating a computer.  At times, employees are required to work in excess of the normal work schedule, particularly during trial preparation.  Employees in this position must be mobile, have the ability to bend, and have ability to lift and carry files weighing approximately 10-15 lbs.
