Associate General Counsel - Reinsurance

Reports to: Group General Counsel


Overview:


The Associate General Counsel - Reinsurance will support Accelerant’s global reinsurance operations by providing expert legal advice with a focus on drafting and negotiating reinsurance and associated agreements and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, as well as overseeing the lifecycle of reinsurance contracts and agreements. We are seeking a skilled and proficient attorney with at least 8 years of experience in reinsurance and insurance matters to join our legal team. This role involves close collaboration with various departments within the Accelerant group and maintaining a comprehensive tracker of document statuses and coordinating the execution process across internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities:


  • Provide legal counsel and support on reinsurance matters, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating reinsurance contracts, endorsements and interests and liability agreements and related agreements.
  • Collaborate with Accelerant’s ceded reinsurance, underwriting, claims, operations and finance departments to address legal issues and provide solutions that align with business objectives
  • Support the development and implementation of corporate reinsurance standard wording templates and procedures.
  • Advise on regulatory compliance issues related to reinsurance and underwriting activities.
  • Assist with regulatory filings related to reinsurance agreements.
  • Maintain an Excel-based tracker of all contracts, including status updates (e.g., draft, under review, under signature, fully executed), ensure timely updates and accuracy of contract records.
  • Coordinate the contract review and signature process with internal teams and external parties. Proactively follow up with stakeholders to ensure timely review and execution.
  • Conduct legal research and stay abreast of relevant laws, regulations, and industry practices.
  • Review and advise on reinsurance-related documentation and transactions.
  • Provide training and guidance to internal teams on legal and regulatory issues related to reinsurance.
  • Assist in corporate governance and risk management activities as they pertain to reinsurance.
  • Organize and archive executed contracts for easy retrieval and audit readiness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Group General Counsel.


Qualifications:


  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • At least 8-10 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance, including at least 5-6 years of experience in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel.
  • Significant experience in drafting and negotiating reinsurance agreements and contracts.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance and reinsurance principles, practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • A proven self-starter with ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • An ability to promptly make decisions and/or to roll out decisions, reflecting all available information and appropriate risk assessments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent technology skills, including Outlook, Word, Adobe, Excel, as well as using SharePoint for document management and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with contract management systems or tools (optional but a plus).
