Position Qualifications

Education

  • Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Assistance, or Legal Studies


Experience

  • Two (2) years of work experience as a Paralegal, Legal Assistant, or work involving legal procedures, terminology, or administration

OR
  • Associate’s in an unrelated field + Certificate in Paralegal Studies + 2 years experience needed
  • Bachelor’s in Paralegal Studies, Legal Assistance, or Legal Studies – no experience needed
  • Bachelor’s in an unrelated field + an Associates or Certification in Paralegal Studies – no experience needed
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school – no experience needed

Essential Job Tasks

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.
  • Assists attorneys with depositions, witness interviews, court proceedings, and pretrial/trial preparation, including preparation of witness summaries, depositions, organizing exhibits, securing evidence, and documentation such as subpoenas and witness notifications
  • Produces initial drafts of pleadings, motions, briefs, memos, discovery requests and responses, reports, and correspondences as assigned and in accordance with court rules
  • Assists attorneys in researching statutes, legal cases, and other sources for legal precedents and case applicability utilizing computerized research tools
  • Reviews, organizes, indexes, redacts, and date stamps pertinent documents for disclosure/discovery and use in court
  • Analyzes, organizes, reviews, and verifies records and other documents obtained through the discovery process
  • Utilizes software and case management systems for litigation support and trial use
  • Attends continuing legal education seminars and in-house training

Working Conditions
Office setting in high volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations. The job requires the ability to lift up to 20 pounds floor to waist and push or pull for a distance of up to 100 feet.

Selection Procedure

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified. Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.

A background investigation is conducted on a current employee who changes to a Safety Sensitive Position or one having the potential for serious adverse impact on the integrity or efficiency of the County. Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.
