Overview

This position is in the International Litigation group that provides dispute resolution services, including arbitration and litigation management to all Chevron International Upstream operations and provides guidance to several corporate groups located all over the world. The attorneys in this group have expertise in international arbitration and litigation and handle a wide variety of matters including disputes with foreign governments, major construction litigation, contract disputes, environmental claims, personal injury, labor and employment and government and internal investigations. The attorneys retain and directly manage external counsel and partner with all internal stakeholders including business clients and other Chevron groups including Corporate Affairs. The position reports to Managing Counsel- International Exploration & Production Litigation in San Ramon, CA.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing guidance and oversight on a wide variety of global disputes and pre-dispute counsel to our business partners and investigations arising from oil and gas exploration and production activities all over the world.
  • Developing and implementing strategy consistent with business objectives and principles
  • Providing timely, fit-for-purpose counsel to business clients and Law Function management
  • Facilitating innovative resolutions to disputes, utilizing Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) when appropriate
  • Leading and participating in incident investigations
  • Providing independent case assessments and evaluations
  • Effectively partnering with outside counsel, experts, and consultants
  • Establishing budgets and managing legal spend
  • Providing pre-dispute guidance on legal and regulatory issues
  • Partnering seamlessly and effectively with Chevron in-country attorneys and other stakeholders
  • Coordinating discovery, including maximizing effective use of in-house resources
  • Traveling to international and domestic locations on short notice and as needed for extended time periods

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor and Membership in California State Bar or other U.S. State Bar, with eligibility to be registered as California in-house counsel. May consider applicants registered with the California State Bar as a Foreign Legal Consultant.
  • 7 or more years of experience in litigation and/or international arbitration with primary responsibility for significant claims and cases
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate complex disputes and sophisticated issues
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to prioritize work
  • Strong inter-personal skills including ability to seamlessly partner with business clients and other internal stakeholders, other in-house counsel, external counsel, and Law Function professionals
  • Ability to effectively manage and report on a high volume of complex and diverse claims
  • Must hold a valid passport

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oil and gas industry knowledge and experience
  • Recent hands-on litigation experience within a major law firm or specialty boutique firm and/or in-house experience managing significant matters
  • First and/or second-chair trial and/or international arbitration experience

  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $159,200 –$305,500 . The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
