Portsmouth, VA (pop. 96,000) The City of Portsmouth desires a City Attorney skilled in handling complex legal matters with discretion. The City Attorney provides legal advice to the City Council, officials, department heads, employees, and supervises all personnel in the Office of the City Attorney. Like many municipalities, Portsmouth faces both major challenges and exciting opportunities, and the City is seeking a motivated individual with a solid legal background to join the team. The ninth most populous city in the state, Portsmouth is situated along the Elizabeth River in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. It is home to the nation’s oldest shipyard and numerous other military, federal, health, and transportation-related employers and assets. Candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate degree, be eligible to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, possess experience in Public Law, and at least 3 years of management or supervisory experience. The starting salary range is $185,000 - $200,000 +/- DOQ. Residency in the City of Portsmouth is required within 6 months of employment.
