Television Group (WBTVG) develops and oversees the entire portfolio of Warner Bros.’ television businesses, including worldwide production, traditional and digital distribution and broadcasting. Warner Bros’ content is distributed around the world by Warner Bros. Television’s Domestic and International Distribution groups.

Opportunity Overview

The Job

Warner Bros. Television, a division of WB Studio Enterprises Inc. seeks a Sr. Counsel for the 2300-Studios & Networks department.
Drafts, negotiates, reviews, revises and analyzes contracts related to acquisitions and production; analyzes clearance, advertising and promotional issues; researches and responds to legal inquiries; advises management on legal risks arising from specific action or inaction; supervises clerical subordinates in the performance of their tasks.

The Daily
  • Advises company and production personnel on all matters relating to the production and distribution of original audio-visual content, including traditional broadcast and cable television as well as made for new media.
  • Negotiates and drafts agreements relating to the development and production of original programming (e.g. above-the-line contracts, option and literary purchase agreements, production services agreements, assignments, releases, contingent compensation definitions, composer agreements, location agreements, equipment leases, etc).
  • Provide legal counsel in connection with production, distribution and marketing of such projects.
  • Interacts closely with the Business Affairs Department in developing strategies arising from the changes in guild rules or in business practices as well as negotiating disputed business terms in contracts. Works closely with Business Affairs in negotiating rights deals.
  • Researches rights to exploit properties in various markets and media including opining on talent attachments.
  • Creates and updates form agreements
  • Comment on and draft License agreements with networks and SVOD outlets. Negotiate and draft new media agreements attendant to first window series licenses.
  • Advises on clearance matters, including title clearances, and provides general production legal support.
  • Special projects as assigned by the SVP & General Counsel

The Essentials
  • Minimum of 3-8 years experience practicing law with a national law firm, a major firm or television studio, or a major online service or platform.
  • Experience with intellectual property strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Juris Doctor degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school required
  • Admission to the California Bar required; Bar membership must be in good standing
  • Television legal experience strongly preferred. Intellectual property experience required.
  • Must have knowledge of law and legal environment of entertainment industry sufficient to draft and negotiate legal documents and counsel management on legal implications of their actions.
  • Must be able to analyze, draft and negotiate contracts.
  • Must be able to research legal questions and communicate responses effectively to all levels of corporate and production staff.
  • Must be able to write in a well-organized, concise and precise manner.
  • Must be able to supervise paralegal and clerical subordinates engaged in performance of legal-related tasks.
  • Must be licensed to practice law; California Bar membership highly preferred
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels, both in person and on the telephone.
  • Must be able to write in a well-organized, concise and precise manner.
  • Must be able to work well under time constraints in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks.
  • Must be able to organize and schedule work effectively.
  • Must be able to work long and flexible hours, if and when necessary.
