Job Description And Duties

Under the direction of the Chief Counsel of the Office of the Director-Legal Unit (OD-Legal) or their designee, the Attorney V’s are the most experienced, skilled, and qualified attorneys within the OD-Legal and the Department of Industrial Relations. They represent and advise the Director of the Department and the various Division Chiefs with regard to the most complex issues that are within legal practice areas of the Department, including with respect to high-level policy issues, program direction, legislation, litigation, and other matters as directed by the Chief Counsel and Director. They have exceptional knowledge and expertise in the areas of law in which OD-Legal provides representation, and are sufficiently expert and specialized to lead and monitor one or more teams of attorneys within a particular practice area. Assignments typically consist of representing the Department and its officials in administrative, state and federal court litigation, including appellate and writ litigation; serving as a hearing officer; research and writing memoranda involving novel, complex or difficult legal questions; evaluation of legislative proposals and drafting legislative language as assigned; rendering legal advice and opinions to Department management; responding to sensitive correspondence on difficult and complex questions; developing strategy and tactics in the most complex issues, disputes and litigation; assisting the Department in developing internal policies; monitoring ethical and conflict of interest rules; and a wide variety of special projects as assigned by the Chief Counsel or the Director. Active State of California Bar License is required.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time position in the Office of the Director Legal Unit in Oakland, Sacramento and Los Angeles. Attorneys may telework on a frequent basis during the pandemic. Employees in this position have their own offices, work at desks, and are required to work extensively on computers as necessary for the drafting of letters, briefs and other documents, and for research, email communication, file review, training and other purposes. Attorneys are expected to handle their own word processing, and secretarial support is generally limited to the finalization and filing process. This position requires occasional in-state travel with possible one to two-night overnight trips within California, based on assignments, and as determined according to the needs of the Department. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, position. Attorneys are expected to work all hours as necessary to accomplish their assignments, and although they will generally average a 40-hour week, longer work hours may be required. There is some flexibility as to the specific work schedule, which will be determined after hire in consultation with the Chief Counsel or Assistant Chief Counsel

Our office is located in the Natomas area, less than 10 minutes from Downtown Sacramento, near Natomas Marketplace, the Promenade, and many other shopping and dining establishments. There are several places to eat within walking distance or a short drive away, including Beach Hut Deli, BJ’s Restaurant, Mimi’s and Panera Bread. Starbucks can be found at the Barnes and Noble or Target stores nearby.
