Everlaw has rapidly expanded over the past 18 months and we’re continuing to grow. We’re seeking a hands-on and experienced Senior Employment Counsel to join our legal team to provide practical and clear legal advice on a broad range of personnel-related topics and ensure Everlaw’s compliance with employment laws in line with its business goals. The Senior Employment Counsel will be the primary legal advisor to Everlaw’s Human Resources Team and will support all aspects of US and international employment for Everlaw’s quickly growing workforce.

This is a part-time (20 hrs/week) onsite position located in Oakland, California.

Getting started

    • We want you to feel like part of the team early on! Our onboarding process will integrate you into the company with informative sessions on our product, policies, processes, and team structure and goals.
    • We’re excited for you to learn, grow, and contribute right away! We trust that you’ll bring experience and knowledge that will uplift and uplevel the team, but we don’t expect you to know everything on Day 1.

In your role, you’ll...

    • Provide substantive area expertise on a broad range of employment issues, including ADA; FMLA; wage and hour/FLSA; employee/contractor classification issues; discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims; and workplace safety/security (including COVID-19).
    • Work closely with Human Resources to develop and implement policies and procedures.
    • Coordinate and manage employment related projects, including internal process reviews and training programs.
    • Review and respond to internal claims, demand letters, audits, and other employment-related inquiries or litigation matters.
    • Lead and/or advise on internal investigations of potential violations of Company policy.
    • Work with outside counsel to support all aspects of employment in international jurisdictions.
    • Partner with cross-functional teams, including the Legal and Executive Teams, to provide strategic, business-oriented employment law guidance for successful execution of company initiatives.
    • Support Everlaw’s commitment to building and maintaining a diverse workplace, free of discrimination and harassment.
    • Keep Human Resources and the Business informed of relevant new employment laws, best practices, and regulations that may have implications for the Company.

About you

    • You have at least 12 years of employment law experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal department, preferably with technology companies.
    • You have excellent judgment in both assessing legal risks and business strategy, and a proven ability to work in a complex and fast-paced environment.
    • You are flexible and willing to approach legal challenges with a business-partner mentality to provide solution-oriented results that balance risk with business goals.
    • You are able to think strategically, be creative and analyze risk in an environment of change and ambiguity.
    • You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a dedication to teamwork, integrity, and collegiality.
    • You have excellent business judgment, drafting and legal interpretation skills.
    • You enjoy challenges and are able to provide creative solutions.
    • You are authorized to work in the United States; please note that at this time, Everlaw is not sponsoring visas for this position.
