About this role

  • Provides paralegal support in the following areas:
    • litigation, administrative proceedings, third party subpoenas, demand letters, and other dispute resolution matters; 
    • U.S. and global employment matters;
    • environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters (including legal support of legacy mine sites); and 
    • legal operations, including inclusion and diversity work and initiatives and oversight of outside counsel.  
       

Your role will consist of

  • Assist with oversight of litigation, administrative proceedings, third party subpoenas, demand letters, and other dispute resolution matters, and serve as primary individual responsible for tracking of such matters.
  • Assist with drafting and collection of material litigation disclosures for disclosure committee meetings.
  • Responsible for direction and management of all document collection projects and e-discovery for litigation and threatened litigation, and management of legal holds, including independent interaction with outside counsel and document management vendors; drafting and updating of global legal hold process, requiring cross functional collaboration with records, IT and other relevant functions; and oversight of document collection and analysis as needed, including in connection with internal investigations.
  • Responsible for initial drafts of various documents, including expat payroll service agreements, assignment letter templates, offer letter templates, separation agreement templates, templates, forms, and processes/procedures for addressing legal and compliance issues that recur (e.g., EEO-1 reporting, resolutions for compensation and benefit plans, public disclosures).
  • Respond to various requests from the HR Service Center and other stakeholders (internal and external) regarding miscellaneous legal and compliance matters. 
  • Assist with legal aspects of various ESG matters, including environmental and other legal issues at legacy mines sites in the U.S., Canada, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico (e.g., oversee tracking and compliance with legal requirements of consent decrees and other legal obligations).
  • Conduct legal research using Westlaw and other research tools to assist in answering questions that arise from various users of in-house legal services, and coordinate and summarize legal analysis and research from other members of the global team.
  • Support legal operations work and analysis and implementation of technology tools to enhance the effectiveness of the legal function.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned, including inclusion and diversity work and initiatives.
  • Keep abreast of legal/legislative changes and be attuned to legal and business trends that could impact the business and proactively and effectively communicate this information to key stakeholders
  • Time permitting, cross-train to learn and assist/cover for other paralegals as needed.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

Knowledge: 

  • Position requires strong paralegal or other legal experience with emphasis in litigation, employment, and/or environmental/ESG areas.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.  Directly-related experience and/or Paralegal Certification may be substituted for degree.

Experience: 

  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years or more of paralegal or other relevant legal experience in a legal department or law firm.  

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and listening skills and ability to engage successfully with a variety of people internal and external to the organization (peers, attorneys and other legal staff throughout the company, senior management, outside attorneys, government agency personnel, etc.)
  • Excellent analytical, research and writing skills, and excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent document management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft Teams (or comparable collaboration-type program), case management/e-billing system (e.g., CounselLink).
  • Ability to problem solve in efficient, business-friendly, creative manner, and ability to work independently.  
  • Must have:  a positive, team-oriented approach; excellent judgment; an ability to handle high volume of work and prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines; a willingness to work hard and take initiative; a continuous improvement mindset; and a strong desire to learn more about the law, and to learn about Newmont’s business.
  • Must be flexible and able to self-motivate and work on complex issues in a practical, problem-solving manner.
  • Ability to identify and resolve or escalate issues in a timely manner, and willingness to cross-train and support other paralegals and members of the legal department. 
  • Foreign language skills (Spanish or French) a plus but not required.
     

Working conditions and location

  • The position is based in the Denver corporate office; a mixture of in-office and at-home work is anticipated consistent with the company’s hybrid work model.
  • Minimal travel may be required.  

The salary range offered for this role is $100,000 - 120,000. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.  The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.   

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance.
