The position will lead contracting and legal issues around customer relationships within Home & Community Care, a large, dynamic and growing group of businesses providing care, care coordination and related services principally to members of Medicare Advantage plans in both home and post-acute settings. Candidates should have at least 7 years of experience practicing in the health care industry, preferably representing health care providers and/or Medicare Advantage health plans. The position requires strong contracting background and knowledge of state and federal health laws, including Medicare Advantage, provider, network, financial and clinical issues. Position will involve working directly with business clients of the organization, collaborating with colleagues across the nation, and regulatory compliance.

Successful candidate will be part of a collaborative team of attorneys and support staff in a growing health care business. Will possess strong verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and business instincts. The ability to operate in a matrixed environment will be an important quality for the successful candidate.  Prior law firm or in-house experience are desired.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and negotiating contracts
  • Finding solutions to complicated health care contracting issues
  • Related party legal issues arising out of Medicare Advantage bid rules and state Department of Insurance regulatory filing (Form D) rules 
  • Value based contracting such as global capitation and shared savings and related concepts
  • Contracting with both external and internal payers
  • Developing best practices for addressing emerging legal and business risks

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree  
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction
  • 7+ years of experience with law firm or in-house legal department with a focus on healthcare contracting (e.g. payer contracting)
  • Knowledge of health care law, including privacy, anti-kickback laws, the False Claims Act, and other health care fraud and abuse laws
  • Proven strategic thinker with experience evaluating and determining legal course of action to meet business needs
  • Proven well-developed written and verbal communications and presentation skills  
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts  
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating across matrixed business and legal environment
  • Experience providing advice to senior business leaders

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $118,000 to $226,800 per year. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
