Senior Director, Ethics and Compliance Investigations

 

 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: Lead the team responsible for compliance investigations and the operation of the company’s Ethics Hotline.

 

 

This role can be located in Foster City, CA or Remote.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the Ethics and Compliance Investigations function, ensuring alignment with the organization's ethics and compliance program

  • Lead the team responsible for the operation of the Ethics Hotline and compliance investigations, including ensuring reports are triaged appropriately to reach the right team

  • Assess and manage compliance concerns reported from various sources (including the Ethics Hotline) and collaborate with key stakeholders to determine appropriate course of action, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to ethical conduct

  • Create and execute compliance investigation plans and oversee the work of internal and external resources involved in the investigation

  • Develop and execute comprehensive strategies for conducting comprehensive compliance investigations across the organization, ensuring investigations are efficient, effective and thorough

  • Oversee and guide internal and external investigative teams, allocating resources to maintain the highest standards of integrity and fairness in the investigative process, including in gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and analyzing information

  • Ensure that investigations are conducted in a timely, thorough, and legally compliant manner

  • Lead the management of the Ethics Hotline, ensuring that it operates as a central and effective channel for reporting and addressing ethical concerns throughout the organization

  • Develop and implement protocols for receiving, documenting, and responding to reports made through the Ethics Hotline, ensuring a commitment to transparency and accountability

  • Foster a culture of open communication, trust and transparency, encouraging employees at all levels to report potential violations without fear of retaliation, strengthening Gilead’s core values

  • Present investigation findings, insights, and recommendations to executive leadership and the Board of Directors, highlighting potential areas of risk and proposing remediation strategies to protect Gilead’s reputation and integrity

  • Maintain accurate and organized documentation of all investigations, ensuring compliance with record-keeping requirements and facilitating regulatory reporting as needed

  • Partner closely with the Litigation & Investigations team to conduct both privileged and non-privileged compliance investigations, creating a seamless partnership and alignment of Legal’s core strategies

  • Collaborate extensively with the broader Ethics & Compliance, Litigation & Investigations, and Legal teams on investigation-related matters and potential disciplinary or remediation actions, driving a coordinated and cohesive approach

  • Conduct regular assessments on potential causes of issues, developing and sharing insights and recommendations with relevant stakeholders to ensure continuous improvement in company’s ethics and compliance program

  • Maintain strict confidentiality throughout the investigation process, ensuring the protection of sensitive information and individuals involved

  • Lead, inspire, and develop the team, fostering a high-performance culture, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to enhance the team’s capabilities and effectiveness.

 

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education & Experience

 

Excellent project management skills and sound judgment in managing cases and interacting with internal stakeholders.

  • Extensive experience in investigations, including internal investigations in healthcare compliance matters.

  • A Juris Doctorate is preferred with 10+ years or 14+ years of experience, with a BA/BS degree or 12+ years of experience, with an MS/MA or MBA

  • Prior experience as a prosecutor or government attorney conducting investigations.

  • Management experience and ability to mentor and supervise attorneys and staff.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality in dealing with sensitive matters

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and ideally one or more other languages of the countries in which the company operates.

  • Think strategically about compliance and risk, enabled by a deep understanding of business objectives, industry trends, and the regulatory landscape

  • Effectively collaborate, communicate, and work cross-functionally across Compliance and business orgs

  • Engage a mindset of continuous improvement and agility in the context of changing regulatory environments and organizational needs

 

The salary range for this position is: $221,170.00 - $286,220.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
