General Definition of Work

The Executive Director of Board and Legal Operations will work closely with and assist the Board of Education and the General Counsel in fulfilling their respective duties; manages the Board and Board-related meetings; and directs administrative and operational activities of the Office of General Counsel.

General Counsel

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and manages operations and activities of Board services and legal support services
  • Oversees constituent services operation
  • Analyzes and reports to the Board collected data that identifies the public's concerns regarding the school district
  • Assists with the development, monitoring, and reconciliation of the departmental budget
  • Trains staff; implements changes to office procedures; performs all other functions necessary to maintain efficient office operations and related duties
  • Serves as primary staff contact for Board members and primary liaison between Board and executive staff and departments; assists Board members on varied projects/requests
  • Coordinates all Board meeting locations, logistics and materials
  • Attends all Board meetings
  • Researches topics as requested
  • Recommends changes to procedures as needed
  • Oversees posting of positions and hiring process for Office of General Counsel
  • Oversees and manages office support staff.
  • Oversees daily operations in collaboration with General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel
  • Serves as Project manager for special projects within Office of General Counsel
  • Works collaboratively with Superintendent and Chief of Staff; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Board Clerk and Assistant Board Clerk
  • Office support staff, including Administrative Assistants,
  • Office operations staff, including Contracts Administrator, and Public Records Officer

  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 5 years related work experience in an education, operational, governmental, legal, or related field required
  • Minimum of 10 years work experience with a school district or public agency preferred

OR

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
