Associate General Counsel

The Associate General Counsel reports to the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the organization. The Associate General Counsel acts on behalf of the organization on matters related to corporate compliance and legal claims made against the organization and its programs on a wide range of legal topics; works in consultation with the General Counsel to ensure coordination of legal matters across the organization; and provides a strategic approach to assess risk and reduce liabilities. This is a hybrid role with both in office (Media, Pennsylvania) and remote work. Limited travel including possible air travel is expected.

The following duties may be performed independently or in conjunction with the General Counsel:

  • Provides thoughtful and sophisticated legal advice on complex matters
  • Reviews and/or prepares contracts, leases and other legal documents for execution by or on behalf of the organization
  • Analyzes legal claims/issues for corporate management and provides counsel on most effective course of action including potential impacts
  • Provides advice on a variety of policies and procedures, including regulatory compliance, privacy, real estate, and employment issues
  • Represents organization in administrative and/or court proceedings
  • Manages claims filed by or against the organization, utilizing internal and external resources to resolve matters. Liaises with external counsel in preparation for litigation matters
  • Responds to subpoenas, including document review and production and preparation of witnesses
  • Advises organization and/or division leaders on regulatory compliance requirements, as well as internal policies and procedures
  • Works closely with organizational leaders, including executives and at times board members, in addressing institutional legal and risk matters
  • Works collaboratively as part of the Office of General Counsel and with leaders throughout the organization in identifying and developing proactive and creative solutions to legal issues
  • Provides legal advice for urgent and emergent legal matters arising outside of traditional business hours
  • Prepares and presents trainings to internal stakeholders on relevant legal issues
  • Remains current on legal developments in areas of expertise and assist organization in responding to changes in laws/regulations/legal risks
  • Provides support to overall projects and tasks within the Legal Department
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education & Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from an American Bar Association accredited school of law
  • Member of the Pennsylvania Bar or eligibility for reciprocity admission to Pennsylvania Bar pursuant to Pennsylvania Bar Admission Rule 204
  • Five (5) years' experience in a law firm or in-house corporate department, preferably in healthcare and/or non-profit
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to maintain effective collaborative relationships with organization leadership and staff
  • Advanced research, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Strong decision-making, organizational, and planning skills
  • Demonstrated capability for legal research, analysis and reasoning
  • Average to intermediate skills with Microsoft Office suite specifically, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
  • Ability to multi-task several priorities and multiple-demanding projects
  • Ability to identify and resolve complicated and sensitive problems creatively and with professional discretion
  • Ability to interact and function effectively in a complex, multi-state, multi-licensed environment
  • Broad knowledge of healthcare and/or non-profit law preferred
  • Must have valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • Must be willing and able to travel to various organization locations as required for job responsibilities
