The Vice President, Litigation oversees litigation functions, provides legal counsel and represents clients in civil litigation and other legal proceedings. Oversees the investigation of potential cases, preparation of cases for filing and trial, preparation of amicus briefs, discovery, and negotiations. Collaborates with senior leadership to develop long-term strategic plans to achieve the organization’s litigation goals. Acts as an expert on legal and policy matters to advise on organization priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic counseling and advice to the Senior Vice President, Litigation, and other executives as a key member of the Litigation leadership team.
  • Oversees the planning, strategy, and execution of litigation in federal and state courts nationwide.
  • Supervises, coaches, develops, and evaluates experienced litigators and litigation support staff.
  • Reviews and edits memoranda, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Oversees investigations of potential cases to determine whether to recommend filing a lawsuit or an amicus brief.
  • Executes cross-functionally within the organization to promote strategic objectives.
  • Provides thought leadership on legal and policy priorities.

Qualifications

  • JD required and must be a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or eligible for admission.
  • At least 15 years of experience as a practicing attorney, leading successful legal teams.
  • Managed complex litigation for 5 years and supervised attorneys and support staff for 3 years with responsibility for managing their performance and promoting their professional development.
  • Proficient in fostering an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued. Expertise in legal matters related to low-income and older populations, including employment discrimination and consumer litigation.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit driving innovative legal theories and approaches.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and manage relationships with clients, co-counsel, and others.
  • Effective representation of individuals, classes of individuals, and institutional clients.
  • Utilizes investigative, analytical, and litigation skills for effective supervision and guidance.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in case selection and strategy.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
