Corporate Counsel

Modern Woodmen of America
Posted Feb 02
Full Time
Rock Island, Illinois

Have you ever thought, “One day I hope to work in-house for a fraternal benefit society”? Probably not, but, really, why not? Fraternal benefit societies are unique membership organizations with peculiar names that pair the “member owned” characteristic of a mutual insurance company with the “social mission” characteristic of a service organization. They unite individuals with a common bond, provide a variety of life insurance and investment products, and form one of the nation’s most effective volunteer networks. And they need good lawyers. Modern Woodmen of America, the nation’s third largest fraternal benefit society with assets over $17B, is seeking a pioneering mid-career attorney who will provide legal and business guidance to our organization. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to our organization’s success while advancing your career in a supportive and collaborative environment. Responsibilities:

  • Assist in thinning legal risk by researching and providing advice and solutions on matters of insurance, corporate, employment, fraternal benefit, and/or consumer protection laws.
  • Prepare, review, and interpret contracts and other legal documents related to a wide variety of matters.
  • Participate in and supervise dispute resolution ranging from informal advice to operating departments to active litigation management.
  • Represent the organization and manage outside counsel as necessary in legal proceedings.
  • This is a full-time exempt position generally working Monday- Friday.

What we need:

  • A passion for law, a tolerance for business, and a desire to grow professionally. No specific experience with fraternal benefit societies or life insurance is required.

  • At least 7 years’ experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Strong analytical, drafting, negotiating, and presentation skills.

  • Willingness to obtain industry certifications and expertise.
  • Occasional domestic travel is required.

  • Pay: The annual pay range for Counsel position is $130,000-$167,000. Annual pay range for Sr. Counsel position is $160,000-$200,000.
