JOB SUMMARY:

Public Rights Project (PRP) is a public interest legal nonprofit with a remote team based throughout the United States. Our mission is to close the gap between the promise of our laws and the lived reality of our most vulnerable communities. Since 2017, we have partnered with state, local, and tribal governments to protect civil rights and advance economic justice.

We support a wide range of government offices, including Attorneys General, District Attorneys, City Attorneys, and local election officials with litigation representation, legal strategy, and community partnerships to help offices ensure free and fair elections, protect reproductive justice, fight back against state abuses of power, and promote workers’ rights. We also provide training and fellowships to support our partners in pursuing these goals.

Public Rights Project welcomes summer Law Clerks who are interested in cutting-edge impact litigation, public service, and creative strategies to advance core civil rights, the rights of workers and consumers, and more. Examples of current and recent matters include litigation challenging Georgia’s SB 92, which limits prosecutorial discretion; representation of the Pima County Attorney in litigation to prevent Arizona’s territorial-era abortion ban from taking effect; and investigation and development of enforcement actions against the use of high-tech tools to exploit workers.

This is a temporary, non-exempt, full time role with expected hours of approximately 40 per week. Law Clerks will have an opportunity to work directly with the Chief Program Officer, Legal Director, Assistant Legal Director, Staff Attorneys, Legal Fellows, multiple cities and states across the country, and community and nonprofit partners. Law clerks will also have an opportunity to contribute to case generation, development, and strategy in order to shape the direction of Public Rights Project.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Law Clerks will have the opportunity to:

  • Research cutting-edge legal questions in Identify opportunities for advocacy and strategize pathways to action;
  • Investigate potential enforcement actions in support of civil, worker, and consumer rights;
  • Draft portions of briefs, motions, and other litigation documents;
  • Participate in staff meetings and meetings with clients, co-counsel, and partners;
  • Draft press statements, “explainers,” and social media on complex legal matters for a public audience, and
  • Work well independently and collaboratively.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Enrolled or recently completed a Juris Doctorate program

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Passion for social justice and public service lawyering
  • Curiosity about the role of government to promote social change
  • Experience with legal advocacy through clinics, internships, externships, or pre-law-school work experience
  • Experience working with underserved communities in and out of the legal context
  • Self-motivation and the ability to structure your time effectively

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: This position will report to the Legal Director.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sitting, talking and listening for up to 8 hours per day. Certain situations may require lifting items up to 20 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Fully remote organization and team. This role may require travel a few times a year to PRP events, case hearings, or meetings. We currently have remote staff in Anchorage, Boston, New York, Kansas City (MO), Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, and Washington, DC, as well as other cities.

Compensation

The determined salary range for this role is set at $ 20 per hour. (for internal equity, PRP will not engage in compensation negotiations; compensation for internships are the same regardless of year in school or experience).
