Litigation Paralegal

The Law Department’s litigation team provides legal services to Securian Financial Group and its affiliates. Our litigation team manages enterprise-wide litigation, pre-litigation tasks, and related assignments. The team also provides legal and research support to internal departments and other enterprise attorneys as needed.

Duties

As a paralegal on this team, you would work closely within the litigation team to manage litigation and pre-litigation matters, serve as a resource for internal clients, and other duties relative to the litigation team including, but not limited to:

  • Team with attorneys to manage lawsuits, interpleaders, bankruptcy notices, garnishments, levies, and subpoenas.
  • Correspond with outside and opposing counsel, contractual counterparts, and internal business partners enterprise wide.
  • Ensure proper implementation of legal holds and eDiscovery management.
  • Communicate and collaborate with business and service areas to identify witnesses, information, and documents for litigation management.
  • Identify, compile, manage, and store documentation for litigation purposes and to respond to subpoenas or other inquiries.
  • Research, investigate, and resolve issues and matters involving substantial legal and factual complexity.
  • Draft, review, and analyze litigation related documents.
  • Review, respond, and/or assign legal review questions from claim examiners and other internal partners.
  • Perform reviews and procedures for power-of-attorney documents, trusts, guardian/conservatorships, and other matters.
  • Develop specialized knowledge and expertise as needed.

What We Would Expect From You

  • Previous law firm or in-house litigation experience required.
  • Ability to research a wide variety of insurance law topics, jurisdictional differences, and civil procedure topics.
  • Participation in special projects and additional responsibilities for other aspects of the law department.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to distill complex topics into straight-forward explanations and disclosures.
  • Self-direction, motivation, and discipline to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organization and planning skills necessary to adjust to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Five years of law firm or in-house litigation experience preferred.
  • Paralegal Certification is helpful but not required for this position.
  • Experience in ERISA, Estate & Trust law, and/or Life Insurance is beneficial but not required.

Securian Financial believes in hybrid work as an integral part of our culture. Associates get the benefit of working both virtually and in our offices. This position requires living within distance (90 minutes) so you can join us 2-3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules. When working in our offices at least two days per week isn’t feasible (vacations, illness, travel, etc.), an eight day per month standard is an option.

Physical Job Requirements

  • Ability to utilize the keyboard, computer and/or mouse for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Ability to utilize the phone and/or virtual meeting platform for 1-6 hours per day
