Great American Insurance Group’s Public Sector Division provides customized insurance programs that meet the unique risk management needs of local, county and state governments, education organizations and special services districts, housing departments or other entities designed to serve the general public. The targeted classes within these public entities include municipalities, public schools, community colleges and counties. Great American offers coverage in the reinsurance and excess insurance markets through Pools, Trusts, Joint Powers Authorities, Reciprocals, Mutuals, Captives and Individual Risks in the public entity space. This position can be based in Cincinnati, OH, East Brunswick, NJ or Richmond, VA. Qualified remote candidates outside of these locations may also be considered.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manages a book of complex primary, direct excess, and reinsurance claims involving Public Sector risks, including property damage, professional liability, general liability, automobile, school board legal liability, employment practices liability, law enforcement liability, public officials liability exposures.
  • Investigates and maintains claims:

o Reviews and evaluates coverage and/or liability. o Secures necessary information (i.e., reports, policies, appraisals, releases, statements, records, or other documents) in the investigation of claims.

  • Works toward the resolution of claims files, and attends arbitrations, mediations, depositions, or trials as necessary.
  • May affect settlements/reserves within prescribed limits and submit recommendations to supervisor on cases exceeding personal authority.
  • Conveys highly complex information (coverage, decisions, outcomes, negotiations, etc.) to all appropriate parties maintaining professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Ensures that claims payments are issued in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensures compliance of claims handling pursuant to all state, legal, statutory, and regulatory bodies to comply with all company procedures and requirements.
  • Serves as the technical expert on products.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to executive management on internal and external issues of strategic importance to products.
  • Accountable for achieving performance targets/business results.
  • Provides technical advice, assistance, and training to lower-level positions, management and other functional areas.
  • Interacts with underwriting and marketing regarding claims trend issues.
  • Performs claim reviews and compliance audits of third-party administrators and self-insured pools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • JD (Juris Doctorate) preferred. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: 8 to 10 years of related experience.
  • Multi-lines claims handling experience preferred.
  • Experience in the areas of property, litigation, professional and general liability, coverage, and reinsurance preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, time management skills, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft365 suite of products.
  • Must be open to travel, including overnight travel as needed.
