UnityPoint Health has an immediate opportunity for an experienced healthcare attorney to become part of our top-notch team of legal professionals. UnityPoint Health is looking to hire an attorney with a minimum of seven (7) years’ legal experience primarily in healthcare contracting and regulatory and operational matters such as billing and reimbursement, conditions of participation, EMTALA, licensure, privacy, informed consent, and/or medical staff relations.

This position is open to remote/work from home with strong preference for candidates residing within the UPH geographies of Iowa, Illinois, & Wisconsin

  • Provide counsel on Federal and state health care laws and regulations and accreditation standards, including in areas of billing, coding and reimbursement, privacy, conditions of participation, certificate of need, EMTALA, research, and professional and facility licensure.
  • Advise on medical staff matters, including bylaws, medical staff disciplinary and corrective action, and peer review.
  • Perform legal research necessary to draft, review and analyze various contracts, policies, and other documents and to advise internal clients.
  • Work closely with compliance and risk departments to investigate and resolve concerns.
  • Advise on the legal aspects of patient care, including in areas of informed consent, medical records/privacy issues, and patients’ rights issues.
  • Assist in promoting efficiency of the law department by preparing templates, forms, guidance materials, and other tools and resources.
  • Negotiate, draft, and review contracts and other legal documents, including vendor agreements, leases, clinical affiliation agreements, service agreements, and other health care contracts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications :

  • License to practice law in Iowa or be licensed to practice in another state and be eligible for registration for in-house counsel in Iowa.
  • Law degree from an accredited nationally recognized law school.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of healthcare legal experience is preferred
  • Highly developed communication skills to effectively work with all levels of management throughout UnityPoint Health, its subsidiaries and affiliates.
  • Ability to continuously display high standards of ethics, honesty, integrity, and dependability.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgment, decision making and problem solving expertise.
