Description

We are looking for an experienced and motivated attorney to join Amazon's Sustainability Legal team as we work on some of the most ambitious sustainability challenges on the planet. In this role, you will be the primary lawyer supporting Amazon's Social Responsibility team in driving customer trust, business continuity, and sustainable social impact by embedding respect for human rights and the environment throughout Amazon’s entire value chain.

Key job responsibilities

Role

You will be a trusted legal advisor for Amazon’s Social Responsibility (SR) team and other business teams across Amazon as we develop and grow our SR program and its work supporting Amazon’s operations, supply chains, and growing businesses. In this role you will:

  • Strategically advise and partner with SR leaders to develop, shape, and scale Amazon’s SR programs, human rights strategy, and risk management systems in light of Amazon businesses’ and operations’ continued growth, including identifying and implementing process improvements and advising on technology-enabled solutions;
  • Advise on current and emerging social responsibility, human rights, responsible sourcing and supply-chain-related regulations, including human rights and environmental due diligence regulations and reporting requirements;
  • Serve as a centralized legal resource for teams across Amazon on social responsibility and human rights issues, including legal peers, Amazon businesses and the Public Policy and Public Relations teams;
  • Support the SR team in developing and updating Amazon’s social responsibility and human rights policies, standards, and commitments; and
  • Advise the SR team and other Amazon teams on managing human rights escalations, investigations, assessments, and external inquiries.

Basic Qualifications

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active membership in one state bar
  • 5+ years of legal experience
  • 3+ years of experience providing legal counsel and support for ESG, social responsibility, human rights, or similar matters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience counseling global companies with complex supply chains and operations;
  • Experience working on implementing regulatory compliance programs and responding to regulatory inquiries;
  • Experience with global human rights laws, standards and frameworks;
  • Experience advising and conducting human rights due diligence activities and impact assessments;
  • Experience advising on ESG transparency and reporting requirements;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated proficiency in working closely with and advising senior business leadership;
  • Outstanding legal and business judgment and strong analytical skills, even in ambiguous situations;
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed;
  • Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams in high pressure, high visibility situations; and
  • Common sense, enthusiasm, and a good sense of humor and fun.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $123,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $229,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
