Role Overview

Could you be our next Assistant General Counsel, Privacy? Globe Life is looking for an experienced Assistant General Counsel, Privacy to join the team!

In this role, the Assistant General Counsel, Privacy will function as a key member of the Company’s Legal Department and will report directly to the Vice President, Insurance Regulation. He or she will work collaboratively with the Director of Privacy and other members of the Privacy Office to help create a privacy culture within the organization that ensures business practices are conducted in agreement with applicable privacy laws and regulations, and will provide guidance to Regulatory Compliance, Information Security, and business leaders on all data and consumer privacy matters.

This is a hybrid position located in McKinney, TX (WFH Monday & Friday, In Office Tuesday-Thursday).

What You Will Do

 

  • Draft and provide legal review of policies and procedures regarding the privacy of, access to, and use of personal information.
  • Counsel business partners on the impact and requirements for emerging privacy laws, including through issuing legal memorandums, delivering legal requirements, and working with outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Monitor the privacy legal and regulatory landscape and act as legal subject matter expert for applicable privacy and data protection laws and regulations, including but not limited to, HIPAA, GLBA and NYDFS Regulations, PIPEDA, New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020, CCPA and CPRA, CPA and VCDPA, and state data breach notification requirements.
  • Support incident and data breach response, process, and remediation efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Privacy Office on privacy-related education, insight, and training to privacy stakeholders.
  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on privacy and data protection, risk assessment, and risk mitigation.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure that privacy notices, forms, and processes are up to date and meet current business and legal requirements.
  • Partner with business and risk management stakeholders on data mapping, classification, and related data management/compliance programs.
  • Assist in the third-party risk management process and acts as escalation point for review and negotiation of contracts addressing legal concerns relative to the sharing and use of consumer data.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by senior legal, compliance, information security and privacy leaders.

What You Can Bring

 

  • JD with preferred experience focused on data privacy and/or data governance.
  • Active membership in good standing in the bar of at least one U.S. state.
  • Experience providing legal advice, support, and business solutions for a large, regulated organization, whether in private practice or in-house roles.
  • Industry and Privacy certifications demonstrating relevant privacy knowledge. Certifications considered applicable to this position (non-inclusive list): Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US), Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C) – preferred.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of One Trust, Trust Arch or other Privacy technology is preferred.
  • Previous experience with a governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC) platform is helpful.
  • Well organized planning and reporting capabilities.
  • Judicious in carrying out assignments with limited direction.
  • Has broad knowledge and experience that includes strong knowledge of privacy laws and regulations in the United States and Canada, with a knowledge of New Zealand privacy law preferred.
  • The background and ability to rapidly understand and change the privacy program for new privacy laws in existing areas of business operations or in expanding areas of operations.
  • Good interpersonal skills that include the ability to effectively communicate in both written and verbal forms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers, clients, partners, and corporate executives.
  • Proven problem solving, research, and critical thinking skills.
  • Must be flexible and maintain a positive “can do” attitude.
  • Remains professional and cool headed in high pressure situations.
