Description

As Privacy Counsel, you will report directly to Verily’s Chief Counsel, Digital Stewardship, and support Verily’s privacy efforts, working closely with product counsel, and our product development, compliance, and security teams. You will counsel executives and product teams on a broad array of data privacy and security laws that are implicated in the development and deployment of groundbreaking products, and support the advancement of Verily’s overall data privacy program.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist legal advice and subject-matter expertise required to support Verily’s privacy program and product development, including working with our innovators through all stages of the product and feature development and commercialization lifecycle, while ensuring compliance with applicable global privacy and security regulations for our diverse suite of products, and services, and partnerships.
  • Provide sound compliance advice based on up-to-date knowledge of relevant data privacy and security regulations and industry guidelines across global markets, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”), the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”), and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”).
  • Provide support on privacy and security provisions of complex commercial agreements relationships that directly contribute to the success of Verily’s products, services, and partnerships in the market.
  • Maintain awareness of new laws, enforcement activity, and other developments in the privacy domain, manage employee training and drive discussion among key stakeholders across the company to continuously improve organizational privacy practices.
  • Serve as a point of contact for Alphabet and Google privacy teams and facilitate alignment with respect to privacy matters.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have substantive experience working on privacy issues, ideally at the intersection of technology and healthcare, as well as, strong interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Juris Doctor from accredited institution, and active member of at least one state bar.
  • 6 years (or more) of attorney level experience.
  • 3 years (or more) of experience with data privacy laws and regulations targeted to healthcare and life sciences, including HIPAA.
  • Significant experience with CCPA & GDPR.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in California.
  • Experience advising legal team members and product teams on a wide range of substantive privacy topics, including specific expertise with HIPAA, CCPA, and GDPR.
  • Experience counseling and negotiating data protection terms in enterprise agreements, with experience negotiating requirements from U.S. and E.U. privacy frameworks.
  • Experience designing compliance programs, policies, and processes.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad range of legal matters. Demonstrated ability to complete several simultaneous projects on a deadline.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $188,000 - $299,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
