Flint Hills Resources has a Senior Counsel opening on their team! This is a critical role in providing legal guidance and support to our refining and pipelines business. The role will involve a wide range of legal matters related to pipeline operations, regulatory compliance, transactions, and risk management. The Senior Counsel will collaborate with internal stakeholders, external partners, and regulatory authorities to ensure legal compliance, mitigate risks, and support business initiatives.

The Senior Counsel will report to the Executive Vice President & General Counsel and will be based at the headquarters in Wichita, Kansas - relocation assistance offered!

 

What You Will Do

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a broad range of legal matters related to refining and pipeline operations, including regulatory compliance, land acquisition, easements, and right-of-way issues.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and legal documents, such as pipeline construction, operation, and maintenance agreements, purchase and sale agreements, and service contracts.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support business needs and keep abreast of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards affecting pipeline operations.
  • Advise on pipeline and environmental, health, and safety regulations, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess and manage legal risks associated with pipeline projects, operations, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Represent the company in negotiations, disputes, and regulatory proceedings related to pipeline operations and land rights.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of compliance programs, policies, and procedures to ensure adherence to applicable laws and regulations.
  • Track emerging legal and regulatory trends in the refining, oil, and gas industry, and provide timely advice on potential impacts to the business.
  • Manage external counsel and legal budgets effectively.
  • Provide training and guidance to internal stakeholders on legal compliance and risk management matters.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, industry associations, and external partners to advocate for the company's interests and contribute to industry initiatives.

 

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school. Admission to the bar in relevant jurisdiction is required
  • Experience practicing law, with a focus on oil and gas, refining and pipeline industries
  • Experience with federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing pipeline operations, including PHMSA
  • Experience analyzing complex legal issues, providing practical advice, and developing creative solutions
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and managing external counsel

 

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Minimum of 6-10 years of experience practicing law, with a focus on the refining, oil, and gas industry, preferably in the pipeline sector
  • Experience with FERC regulations and environmental requirements
  • Experience with pipeline real estate matters, including right-of-way, easements, and other related contracts
