ByteDance Names John Rogovin New Global GC Amid Legal Challenges

ByteDance has appointed John Rogovin as its new Global General Counsel, bringing extensive legal experience from his previous role at Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.

ByteDance Ltd., parent company of social media platform TikTok, has welcomed John Rogovin to its executive team as the new Global General Counsel. Rogovin, who is recognized for his extensive legal expertise, joins ByteDance after a notable tenure at Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., where he served as the Chief Legal Officer for over a decade.

The announcement of Rogovin's appointment was made through an official TikTok blog post, highlighting his previous roles, including his experience at the US Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department. His arrival comes at a critical juncture for ByteDance, as the company is embroiled in a lawsuit against the US government. The legal action is in response to legislation that mandates ByteDance to relinquish its ownership stake in TikTok or face potential prohibition of the app's operations in the United States.

ByteDance has been under scrutiny, with US officials raising concerns over the company's connections to China, suggesting that TikTok may pose a security threat to American users. ByteDance has countered these claims, asserting that the law is a violation of the First Amendment rights.

TikTok's CEO Shou Chew expressed confidence in Rogovin's capabilities, stating that his leadership will be invaluable as the company strives to foster trust and effectively manage the complex legal and regulatory landscape it faces globally.

The position of Global General Counsel was previously held by Erich Andersen, who announced his decision to step down earlier in April. Andersen, who observed a reduction in his responsibilities amidst growing criticisms from US legislators, will continue to serve as a Special Counsel to ByteDance. In his new role, Rogovin will directly report to ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo, as per the company's statement.
