LexisNexis, one of the top global leaders in legal research and technology, announced its acquisition of Henchman, a Belgian startup that specializes in contract drafting. While the deal's financial terms have not been made public, the transaction is set to close early in the second half of this year. The only thing holding the deal back is the pending customary regulatory approval.

A Strategic Move to Strengthen LexisNexis Offerings

LexisNexis's acquisition of Henchman is considered a strategic move to enhance its vast AI-powered legal solutions. The integration of Henchman's document capabilities will strengthen the compaby’s offerings, such as Lexis+ AI, its proprietary Retrieval Augmented Generation 2.0 (RAG 2.0) platform, and Lexis Create.

Jeff Pfeifer, the Chief Product Officer for LexisNexis in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S., emphasized that the decision was driven by customer demand for more comprehensive and searchable internal data solutions combined with advanced drafting and AI capabilities.

Pfeifer said Henchman will integrate quickly and seamlessly into the company’s existing products, with immediate plans to utilize Lexis+ AI and Lexis Create.

From a Fundraising Front to an Alignment of Vision

Over the years, Henchman has been known for its innovative approach to boosting precedents within an organization's Document Management System (DMS). Before its acquisition by LexisNexis, Henchman was in the fundraising process . 

However, LexisNexis's proposal to the Belgian startup perfectly aligned with Henchman's vision and goals. Henchman's co-CEO and founder, Jorn Vanysacker, acknowledged the strategic fit between the two companies, saying, "The vision that we had was getting beyond what we could build because we don't have that content. And so, with the ambitions that we have to take the market, it made the most sense to go with a party like LexisNexis in collaboration."

A Push in the Right Direction for LexisNexis AI Capabilities

With LexisNexis being among the earliest adopters of generative artificial intelligence within the legal tech markets, the acquisition of Henchman and its technical capabilities will be a critical building block for LexisNexis generative AI strategy.

The completion of the acquisition will see Henchman's entire staff joining LexisNexis, and so will its entire customer base. Henchman's recent achievements, including but not limited to its integration with Microsoft Copilot and being named Product of the Year at Law.com International's Innovation Awards in London, underscore the startup's innovative edge and the potential it brings to LexisNexis.
