LexisNexis Launches Protégé AI Assistant for General Use

Key points:

  • Protégé offers autonomous task completion, personalized workflows, and expanded document-processing capabilities.
  • The AI assistant integrates with major document management systems for seamless functionality.
  • Its agentic AI features allow self-review and refinement of tasks, ensuring accuracy and quality.

LexisNexis Legal & Professional has officially launched its AI-powered assistant, Protégé, to general availability, according to a LawSites report.

Initially introduced in a preview phase last August, Protégé combines generative and agentic AI technologies to revolutionize legal workflows. The assistant now supports legal professionals with tools for drafting, analysis, and self-guided task completion.

Jeff Pfeifer, LexisNexis’ chief product officer for North America and the UK, describes Protégé as a significant step forward in legal AI, designed to enhance efficiency and deliver high-quality outputs.

Key Features of Protégé

According to LexisNexis, Protégé distinguishes itself with advanced capabilities, including:

  • Autonomous Task Completion: The assistant uses agentic AI to draft legal documents, create timelines, and even suggest improvements to its outputs.
  • Document Processing: With a capacity to handle up to 1 million characters, Protégé accommodates complex contracts and filings, streamlining previously time-intensive processes.
  • Workflow Personalization: Users can customize the assistant's outputs based on their practice areas, jurisdictions, and individual writing styles.
  • Integration with DMS: Protégé integrates seamlessly with platforms like iManage and SharePoint, enabling firms to utilize their existing knowledge bases.

Sean Fitzpatrick, CEO of LexisNexis North America, UK, and Ireland, emphasized the company’s vision of providing every legal professional with a personalized AI assistant to enhance their workflows and outcomes.

Supporting Legal Professionals

Protégé is embedded within the Lexis+ AI platform and Lexis Create+ for legal drafting in Microsoft Word, with plans to expand across all LexisNexis products. Tasks Protégé can perform include:

  • Drafting motions, briefs, and tailored transactional documents.
  • Summarizing and analyzing large legal documents.
  • Generating timelines from case files.
  • Drafting discovery documents like interrogatories and deposition questions.
  • Identifying and linking case references to ensure accuracy.

Building on Industry Collaboration

The development of Protégé involved input from over 50 organizations, including Am Law 50 firms, government entities, and academic institutions. The assistant incorporates a range of AI technologies, such as:

  • Extractive AI: Locating precise information from vast datasets.
  • Generative AI: Producing new content based on prompts.
  • Agentic AI: Performing tasks autonomously and refining outputs.

LexisNexis’ proprietary retrieval augmented generation (RAG) platform ensures Protégé’s responses are grounded in accurate, reliable legal content.

“The LexisNexis evolution from extractive to generative to agentic AI makes our legal AI solutions easier than ever to use, helping customers accomplish a remarkable amount of work without needing to be an expert in prompting,” said Min Chen, chief AI officer at LexisNexis Legal & Professional.

LexisNexis told Legaltech News that Protégé would be included for all Lexis AI+ subscribers without any additional charge, but the use of the DMS integrations would carry additional costs. The company has not yet provided updated pricing details for the general release of the assistant.
