Legal Current: GC Transitions in Focus

This week's Legal Current highlights GC transitions at Bitcoin Depot, Cummins, and TPG, showcasing the critical roles legal professionals play in corporate leadership.

Key points:

  • Chris Ryan appointed as Chief Legal Officer at Bitcoin Depot.
  • Sharon Barner, CAO of Cummins, set to retire, potentially paving the way for CLO Nicole Lamb-Hale.
  • Jennifer Chu joins TPG as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, bringing M&A and private equity expertise.

Bitcoin Depot Appoints New Chief Legal Officer

Bitcoin Depot, a leading U.S.-based Bitcoin ATM operator, announced the appointment of Chris Ryan as Chief Legal Officer. Ryan, who comes with a robust background in financial services, cryptocurrency, and regulatory compliance, will play a pivotal role in steering the company’s legal operations as it continues to broaden access to Bitcoin.

As Chief Legal Officer, Ryan will helm Bitcoin Depot's legal and compliance strategy, providing guidance on governance, risk management, and regulatory matters to the executive team. His responsibilities will also encompass overseeing partnerships, legal operations, and policy initiatives that support the company’s ongoing expansion.

Ryan's previous role was Deputy General Counsel at MoneyGram International, where he led legal teams focusing on cryptocurrency initiatives and regulatory strategies. "Chris has spent his career navigating complex financial and regulatory landscapes while leading high-performing legal and compliance teams," stated Brandon Mintz, CEO of Bitcoin Depot.

Cummins' Former GC Sharon Barner to Retire as CAO

Cummins Inc., the Columbus, Indiana-based diesel engine manufacturer, announced the upcoming retirement of Chief Administrative Officer Sharon Barner, effective May 31. Barner, who transitioned from the role of General Counsel to CAO, has been instrumental in managing multiple global functions and shaping the company's strategic direction.

Her impending retirement opens the potential for Nicole Lamb-Hale, the current Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, to step into the CAO role. Lamb-Hale, previously a managing director at Kroll LLC and Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services at the U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration, has a solid track record that positions her as a strong candidate for succession.

"Sharon is not only a renowned legal expert and business leader, she is also a model of courage, integrity, and strong leadership," said Jennifer Rumsey, CEO of Cummins.

TPG Appoints Jennifer Chu as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel

TPG Inc., a global alternative asset management firm, has announced the appointment of Jennifer Chu as its new Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, effective March 31. Chu, who will also join as a Partner, succeeds Bradford Berenson, transitioning to Senior Advisor before his retirement.

Chu's extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and corporate law at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, where she served as Deputy Co-Chair of the M&A Group, prepares her well for her new role at TPG. "We are very pleased to welcome Jen to TPG," said Jon Winkelried, CEO of TPG. "As our firm continues to grow, we will benefit from Jen’s depth of experience, leadership expertise, and judgment."

Chu is looking forward to contributing to TPG's growth in the alternative asset management industry, particularly impressed by the firm’s entrepreneurial culture. TPG, headquartered in San Francisco, manages $246 billion in assets across various sectors, including private equity, credit, and real estate.
