Consilio Acquires AI Research Lab TrueLaw to Advance Legal AI Capabilities

Consilio's acquisition of TrueLaw boosts its legal AI offerings, including proprietary LLMs and narrative analysis, amid broader industry shifts.

Key points:

  • Consilio acquires AI research firm TrueLaw to enhance legal data and AI tools.
  • The deal includes TrueLaw’s proprietary large language model and summarization tech.
  • Acquisition signals further convergence of e-discovery services and AI development in legaltech.

Consilio, a global leader in e-discovery and managed legal review, has acquired AI research firm TrueLaw, a move that reflects accelerating consolidation between traditional legal service providers and next-generation legaltech innovators.

The acquisition, announced Tuesday, positions Consilio to bolster its suite of AI-driven legal tools, particularly through the integration of TrueLaw’s proprietary large language model—dubbed the Expert Legal Model—and its data summarization and analysis systems. Consilio CEO Andy Macdonald framed the move as central to the company’s long-term strategy: “We’re not just keeping pace with AI innovation—we’re driving it forward,” he said in a press release.

TrueLaw co-founder Arunim Samat echoed the ambition, noting that the deal will “significantly accelerate the advancement of our Expert Legal Model and narrative AI capabilities.” The lab’s focus on customizable AI models for law firm applications is expected to align with Consilio’s push into scalable, client-specific tools.

Consilio’s chief technology officer Raj Chandrasekar suggested that the company’s interest goes beyond just AI, pointing to broader innovation in cyber risk and forensic analysis. “Anything we can do from that perspective on making that process of identifying talent, onboarding talent—whether within our own space or to our client space—we are looking at solutions over there, be it AI enabled or otherwise,” Chandrasekar told Legaltech News.

The TrueLaw acquisition comes amid a series of AI initiatives by Consilio. Earlier this year, the company launched Guided AI PrivDetect, a privilege review platform leveraging AI to streamline identification of privileged materials. It also recently introduced Aurora, its legal data management platform, and announced a strategic partnership with LegalMation to develop litigation workflows.
