We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for an Assistant General Counsel, Digital Health in our Office of General Counsel. In this role you will serve as legal counsel and proactive partner to AMA business units as assigned, under the supervision of Senior Assistant General Counsel. You will also provide counsel to managers on legal matters impacting managers' areas of responsibility and prepare supporting legal documents, including appropriate agreements and related documentation. You will analyze legislation, regulations, court decisions of interest to the AMA and maintain subject matter expertise and conduct highly complex work critical to the AMA.


Responsibilities:

Counsel on Digital Initiatives and Emerging Technology

  • Serve as legal counsel to assigned AMA business units, by providing objective, thorough, timely and well-researched legal advice to management on complex legal issues
  • Negotiate, draft and finalize contracts supporting the AMA’s mission-related and revenue-generating activities, with particular emphasis on AMA digital initiatives, including: digital/social marketing and engagement, ad products, ad-tech, insights, mobile applications, digital health, interoperability and information blocking, telemedicine, precision medicine, artificial/augmented intelligence (AI), machine learning, software as a medical device (SaMD), big data and data analytics, fraud and abuse/reimbursement, wearables and the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Assist management’s assessment of legal and business risk of various courses of action to support AMA initiatives, policies and procedures
  • Provide guidance to stakeholders on legal, privacy, data protection and other applicable compliance requirements
  • Provide counsel and transactional solutions to management and employees on a variety of legal questions related to general corporate issues, strategic relationships and regulatory compliance

Other Business Agreements

  • Draft and review a wide variety of business agreements and related documents, as well as regulatory communications and filings

Regulatory and Compliance

  • Review, analyze, interpret and disseminate new laws and regulations affecting nonprofit organizations and AMA initiatives, and aid in implementing any required changes

May include other responsibilities as assigned


REQUIREMENTS:

  • J.D. from an accredited leading law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Illinois or Washington, DC.
  • At least 10+ years of relevant experience, with experience in digital health and emerging technologies; exposure to both a law firm and a corporate environment preferred; significant breadth and depth of matters
  • Experience in effectively collaborating in cross-functional business and legal teams to address and resolve legal issues to achieve the desired business units’ outcome.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to AMA and it business units and initiatives.
  • Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills with a focus on practical outcomes.
  • Superior interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to interact well with clients to gain their respect and confidence to build a trusting relationship.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to persuade and communicate confidently.
  • Excellent research skills.
  • The ability to think creatively and where applicable the ability to present multiple solutions with varying degrees of risk to a given legal problem and to succinctly explain each solution and the corresponding risk mitigation the solution provides.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform with limited supervision from Senior Assistant General Counsel or General Counsel; must be confident in their independent judgment.
  • Some travel required.
