Staff Counsel - Legal

POSITION DETAILS:

Schedule: Days, 8-hour shifts

FTE: Full-Time, 80 hours per 2 week pay period

Location: Main Campus

JOB SUMMARY:

Rady Children’s is the premier pediatric provider in the region with 551 beds, a medical practice foundation, licensed health plan, multiple Southern California satellite locations and a full range of progressive and innovative clinical, teaching and research programs.

The position of (full-time) staff counsel will provide someone relatively new to the health law specialty, but with some related experience, to do meaningful and challenging work in a fast-paced, complex and supportive environment. This generalist role is responsible for providing a broad range of legal services with a strong emphasis on litigation-related activities, risk mitigation, developing education and legal resource materials for staff, providing legal advice for issues related to patient care and business functions and serving as legal counsel on multidisciplinary projects. Key responsibilities also include efficient drafting, review and negotiation of contracts involving various business matters (e.g., clinical/administrative services/purchasing agreements, leases, business associate agreements, and confidentiality agreements).

Candidates with some in-house experience in a hospital or health system are preferred. Candidates who have operations experience in the healthcare field, in addition to legal experience, are also encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have an understanding of the legal/regulatory framework and business of healthcare and strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills. Exceptional abilities to adapt to a high volume of legal work and shifting priorities are also important.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Juris Doctor Degree

California Bar licensure or out-of-state license to practice law with the ability to register as in-house counsel in California

Working knowledge of federal and state health care law, transactions/contracts, not for profit/tax-exempt principles, fraud and abuse laws, and corporate law

Ability to utilize critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as business acumen

Ability to perform legal and health policy research and legal analysis, and determine best practices for applicable setting

Ability to demonstrate initiative in identifying legal exposures and advising and implementing risk reduction strategies; meet deadlines while managing multiple projects in a fast paced environment with shifting or competing priorities

Ability to work independently, as well as within a team; to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others and manage conflict productively; communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Ability to deal tactfully with diverse people, situations and ideas and present advisory and authoritative recommendations to all levels of the organization

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

3 years of experience

1 year health care or clinical experience

Litigation experience
