The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs seeks paralegals to provide support to Committee lawyers and senior staff for the Committee’s litigation, advocacy, and other activities.

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs works to create legal, economic, and social equity through litigation, client and public education, and public policy advocacy with a primary focus on racial justice. For the last 50 years, the Committee has been on the cutting edge of civil rights advocacy in the region bringing precedent setting litigation to address discrimination. Our work focuses on injustices in housing, employment, the criminal legal system, education, public accommodations, and civil rights of immigrants. We partner with individuals and communities facing discrimination and with the legal community to achieve justice. POSITION DESCRIPTION

The paralegals will be part of a team of paralegals who support the Committee’s civil rights and racial justice advocacy. Under the supervision of Committee lawyers or senior staff, as appropriate, the paralegals will conduct client intake and will provide administrative and other support to litigation teams and the Committee’s other activities.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for civil rights and racial equity advocacy.
  • The desire and ability to work in a fast-paced, innovative, and collaborative environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with clients and communities from a diverse set of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with community organizations highly desirable.
  • Fluency in written and oral Spanish preferred (certification at Advanced Mid or above on the OPI/OPIc which will be tested prior to our extending an offer of employment).

COMPENSATION

Salary is based on the Committee’s experience-based salary scale (attached); generous leave and employer-funded benefits.
