Zoom's GC Departs Amidst Legal Team Strategic Shift and Privacy, Security Overhauls

Zoom Video Communications Inc., the leading video conferencing company that became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic, has recently restructured its in-house legal department. This reorganization has led to significant changes in its legal team's composition, with the departure of the former General Counsel, Jeffrey True, who left the company in September.

In the wake of True's departure, Zoom has made strategic appointments within its legal department. Josh Parecki, previously the Head of Trust & Safety, has taken on the role of Chief Compliance & Ethics Officer. Lynn Haaland, who served as Deputy General Gounsel and Chief Privacy, Compliance, & Ethics Officer, has been promoted to Chief Privacy Officer and Deputy General Counsel for Product & Artificial Intelligence.

These changes come at a challenging time for Zoom, as the company faces increased scrutiny over its privacy policies and the use of customer data in developing artificial intelligence tools. Additionally, Zoom has settled a $150-million shareholder class-action lawsuit concerning alleged security flaws in its encryption software, a case that involved Cooley, its counsel, which has represented Zoom in a significant portion of federal court cases in the U.S. over the past five years.

The legal department's reorganization also follows broader company-wide cost-cutting measures, which included the elimination of approximately 1,300 jobs, or 15% of Zoom's workforce earlier this year. The legal and compliance team was not immune to these cuts, with at least half a dozen members being laid off. This period also saw the exit of two Deputy General Counsels: Theodore Gizewski, who transitioned to TikTok Inc. as Head of Legal & Compliance for US Data Security, and Adam Avrunin, who became the General Counsel for Stability AI Ltd (and has since left this position).

Zoom's restructuring of its legal department reflects a strategic realignment to address the evolving legal and regulatory challenges in the tech industry, particularly around privacy and security in the post-pandemic era. The company's approach in reshaping its legal team underscores the importance of compliance and ethical governance in the rapidly changing digital landscape.
