Paralegal Specialist

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and maintain files and case-tracking database
  • Receive newly opened case files and take necessary measures to notify the proper client agency of service and to obtain litigation report and/or other needed case information
  • Establish and update database to track receipt of cases, upcoming deadlines, and other case information, as required
  • Keep attorneys and appropriate staff members informed of the status of cases
  • Monitor the progress of pending cases and initiate action to ensure that established deadlines are met
  • Physically maintain case files and case related material in current status within a filing system that is accessible and enables easy retrieval
  • Perform document reviews and assist in discovery
  • Review volumes of medical records, deposition transcripts, and other documents
  • Prepare summaries and identify critical documents
  • Suggest individuals and entities as appropriate subjects of additional discovery measures, such as the issuance of subpoenas
  • Independently draft subpoenas and related documents and ensure proper delivery of such
  • Track recipients’ compliance with subpoenas and follow up to ensure compliance
  • Maintain discovery material and other case related records in an indexed filing system that is accessible and enables easy retrieval
  • Prepare a variety of legal documents, correspondence, and other related material
  • Compose original letters that require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology
  • Provide a variety of direct legal support services
  • Perform basic legal research and summarize findings applicable to assigned cases
  • Use a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases to research case or program specific matters
  • Verify citations and statutory references contained in legal documents
  • Ensure that citations are correct, complete, and consistent with source material
  • Maintain AUSAs court calendars as directed
  • Schedule witnesses and conferences
  • Exercise judgment and discretion in determining information provided to telephonic inquiries and visitors
  • Maintain professional working relationships with agency counsel and staff
  • Ensure that client agencies are kept informed of the status of assigned cases
  • Assist in trial preparations by compiling trial notebooks, witness lists, exhibit assembly, and exhibit lists, as required
  • Provide assistance that is dependable and effective in dealings with courts, clients, and co-workers (including supervisors and support staff) and others


BACKGROUND

  • At least two years of paralegal litigation experience required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security Access


KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform straightforward legal research
  • Familiarity with a variety of computer applications, specifically the Microsoft Office Suite (word, excel, etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and analytic ability
  • Ability to consistently produce high quality work under pressure
  • Possess a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology


EDUCATION

  • Associate’s degree or higher required
  • Must possess a paralegal certificate

Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc. Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of the time.
